College Visit Videos; the good, the bad & the ugly...

Nothing like a good 7 minute video to get you psyched for the college tour! I think they are useful marketing tools to highlight fun aspects of campus traditions etc.

Which College info sessions had great Videos:

Good:
Lehigh
UDel
American

Ho Hum:
Clemson
Richmond

Emory’s DVD (sent upon request) was good.

For 60 minute college tour DVDs, you might check out Collegiate Choice at [Collegiate Choice Walking Tours Videos - college videos, campus tours, virtual college tours, college planning,](http://www.collegiatechoice.com)

Our family has viewed quite a number of college DVDs … both from colleges directly, and from the Collegiate Choice Walking Tours. I think any video that prompts a student to visit the college is a success. Sometimes that’s dependent on content, sometimes production, sometimes the narrator, and sometimes pure luck (like one Collegiate Tour video that was shot in howling late fall weather). So I recommend viewing as many videos as the student can tolerate. Still there’s nothing like the note of finality that accompanies “I hate this place. I am not getting out of the car.”

Notre Dame has a wonderful video, available for viewing on their website.

I love Ole Miss’s tour videos, available here:

[Virtual Tours - The University of Mississippi](<a href=“Campus Map | University of Mississippi”>Campus Map | University of Mississippi)

It’s not so much the specific things they show, but the way they’re presented. The pleasant music, apparent pride in the school’s history, and calm, friendly voice of the narrator perfectly capture the atmosphere at Ole Miss.

We used the collegiate choice with my son and then I donated them to his GC at his high school.
They varied in how good they were by a lot and I made sure to ask before I ordered, when the DVD was shot, anything over 3 years, I didn’t order.
Fordham’s was wonderful, it was about an hour and he shot it in Fall I think and then put other scenes at the end from winter and spring.
Holy Cross was also very good, it also had 2 tour guides and you can tell the gentleman filming, liked them a lot, it went on 70 minutes and he also took you to the gym area without the guides to show you more.
Drew Univ had an awful one, UConn’s was okay and Haverford’s I remember being dull and turned my daughter off. We traded with others to have a broader number which is a nice idea if you know anyone else with them. (many here have them)
I would never use them to make a final decision, but seeing a real tour from home when you want information a picture not perfected by their website, it’s a nice alternative.

I’m resurrecting this thread because I just did the photo (not video) virtual tour of Dickinson and thought it was great! (This was prompted by the thread on colleges you loved after visiting, where Dickinson was highly recommended.) In this season as a lot of us 2012 parents set off on visits, I thought it might be a good idea to mention good virtual tours. So many are terrible!

Also-- I ordered some collegiate choice videos based on the recs here…the ones I got (Ithaca was one) were just unbearably dull. Yes, they’re amateur, but 10 minutes staring into a corner of a stairwell is too much for me. Also (and this may just be me) I do like the chance to be able to see the best of a college. I’m very good at finding the flaws myself, so pictures that show the virtues are really welcome.
