So I plan on going on some school visits over the next few weeks, two of which are overnight visits in order to meet coaches and team members, etc., but my parents seem heart-set on getting me to contact admissions and try and meet with an admissions counselor. I am a senior in the class of 2012 and have already applied to these schools.

Is there any real reason to contact the admissions for this reason? Should I ask the coaches themselves about that, or do it on my own? I mean I just feel like it is imposing on the admissions people who are obviously extremely busy at this time in the process, and I really hate imposing on people...

Moonman, I had 2 kids go thru the recruiting process… on one visit the coach set up a talk with the admissions dept. which was a small college so I think they had the time. It was not even really necessary IMO because either she was going to get in/or not and because it was a $$ school she had get scholarship money to swing it…

My son never met with anyone in admissions. He was looking at larger schools and we were focusing on the environment of the campus, the coaches, the teammates and the overall “feel” of things.

I would say from our experience, it is not necessary… you will or won’t get in, you will or won’t like the school and you have already applied, so seems like it would be a waste of time for both them and you.

Go ahead and ask the coaches you meet with and if they think it is a good idea then you can. I would suggest sitting in on a class to get a feel for the academic environment. good luck

At several OVs the possible recruits met as a group with the athletic liaison to the admissions committee…they were more informational sessions…I doubt the liaison even knew the names of the girls in the group. At the Claremont colleges the coaches set up meetings with admissions, yet at the school to which she applied ED, and will attend, she never spoke with anyone from admissions.

Moon, I think Momof2010 is offering some good advice. While admissions officers may have time to chat during OV’s in the Fall, now is a tough time for them to break away. Usually the fall meetings with AO’s are to encourage kids to apply and help them deal with questions about the process - since you’ve already applied, that goal isnn’t relevant.

So, you can ask the coach on the OV if there would be any value to such a meeting, but the chances are he or she will say “No.” Any value to a personal meeting as far as getting you accepted is generally taken care of by the regular interview, and in this case if the coach is going to tip you (or not), you’ve already got one additional person who’s met you personally to ‘vouch’ for you. (This all assumes that you have or will be going through the regular interviews.) The only exception I can think of about contacting the admissions office directly while you are there is if there’s no way to otherwise confirm online that your application is complete other than a visit or a call. Then you can pop your head into the admissions office and ask them, then use your judgment if someone growls at you that they’re too busy to deal with some &$&^%& high school brat barging in.
