Hi all,

I'll be visiting Pomona/CMC/Pitzer claremont colleges during the summer, and i have definitely done research into all of them. However, while I have a mental AND physical list of all the things I love about these schools, I don't really have any questions to ask?

Does anyone have any suggestions for questions I might ask that would help me attain a greater insight into the school? Or maybe questions that would help me in writing my applications for them. I'm flying there especially for this (from elsewhere in the US) and I don't want to waste such a great opportunity asking about generic information from the website that I have already looked up.

THANKS IN ADVANCE :)

A good question to ask at any school you are interviewing at is what changes the administration is anticipating over the next four years that would impact you if you were a student there. This is an opportunity for them to tell you about programs that are expanding or contracting, where they plan to invest additional resources, new facilities or program, etc…They may be looking for students with particular interests that match the expansion or changes in their programing, for example.

^That’s a great idea, thanks. Any others?

Do you have any idea what your intended major is? You might ask about facilities and professors in those departments. Also, make sure you get a good look at living accommodations at the various schools, they have some of the nicest dormitories you will ever see. Finally, check out availability of facilities for extra curricular activities you may want to participate in, like sports clubs, music, art, foreign language etc.

Trying not to ask questions whose answers are easily found on the websites is a great start.
You might want to ask what kind of student would NOT be a good fit for each of these schools, sometimes the answers can be very telling.
Looking into exactly what career services offers, beyond the standard stuff they all say, might be enlightening. Ditto research and job opportunities during your studies.
Have the process of cross registering explained thoroughly to you to see how likely you would be to take advantage of it.
Get a really good idea about the surrounding area and the accessibility/lack thereof to L.A.
Perhaps ask each school what they would add if they could wave a magic wand and have it appear – get a sense of what they think they are lacking. E.g. CMCers might say that a new gym would be great.
Don’t necessarily ask admissions this, but you might want to get a sense from the students about the differing alcohol policies on campus and the effect that has on the differing social scenes at the 5Cs.

One interesting source of information is the strategic plan for each school: Many of them are posted on line and you can see exactly what the board and administration are investing in, concerned about, pulling back from, etc…

Great advice from the above posters, thanks! Visit’s in a few days, woo. If anyone else has any other ideas please speak now :D

just came back from cmc last week. Very conversational. I really didn’t have a chance to ask any questions…the guy just kept talking about the school. Really, the schools are so different. Once you get to know them, their differences will stand out. Less so with CMC and Pomona, but that comes down fit. CMC and Pomona kids, IMO, are really different. Basically by the end of each meeting, you will know if the school is right for you.
