College vs. Going to NYC

Can anyone help me with a student that thinks going to NYC is a better idea than going to college or a conservatory. "Why go waste four years of my life when I can go audition for shows". "I'm not learning anything at school".

Is there any statistics that show who "makes it" without going for further education? Is there any books that would help? Can anyone that is at school give some free advice? Do colleges have this information? What's the best option?

I'm not saying either way is better than the other.(I don't know) I'm sure some make a living without going to college. I'm sure there are some that go back to live with mommy and daddy.

I'm not an expert with this - hopefully, it will show up as a link. If not - look down the list of topics a bit for "College vs. Working"

From my personal perspective, I think it would be a very rare 18 year old who is equipped eomtionally, financially, and maturity-wise to just move to the city and try to make it -- not even considering talent and training levels.
