College vs high school scores

Does your high school score determine how well you will do in college? Does it depend on the prestige of the college or your high school? Or major?

There’s a discussion on that going on in this thread: <a href=“"No, the SAT is not Required."
GPA has the best correlation with college performance (test scores are a bit sketchier) but overall it accounts for less than a third of variation so no, not really.

The only thing that determines how well you will do in college is YOU. If you don’t take advantage of the resources of the college it won’t matter how good the resources are (generally the more prestigious the school the more resources they offer; there are exceptions). High school is like College VERY LITE. College generally is a ton more work that you have to stay on top of each day. When you struggle, you have to address your struggles immediately or your grades will suffer (most students don’t have the maturity to do this). And it really helps if you ignore what your friends are telling you about college, although that will be your first tendency because it’s easiest and a whole lot less intimidating than dealing with the people who actually know what they’re talking about, like your profs, TAs, and administrators who are there for no other reason than to help YOU. High school GPA, SAT/ACT scores, SATIIs, ECs, even APs, are together some indication of how you might do in college, but it’s still upto you. For instance, where I went to college they had coeds and beer and other distractions, I had gone to a strict all-boys school, and despite all my h.s. accomplishments I allowed the distractions to get me booted. In my case, the scores and all that were not predictive. You will determine what will happen to you.

My friend did the IB in high school and had to take introduction to biology (year-long course) again because there were no placement exams. She breezed through the course, and had an easy time sophomore year as well. So basically the point if your high school prep was good and you are determined to do your work, you can certainly do well in college.

Does the college you go to matter in terms of getting a good GPA (is that what you mean by doing well in college)? Certainly. Some schools are really easy.
