College w/scholarship deadline conflicts with other colleges-help!

I was accepted by one of my safety schools and now they are sending me numerous scholarship offers, all contingent upon me agreeing to enter the Honors College and signing the offers by March 1. But this conflicts with other schools I have applied to, because the other schools don't even start sending acceptance letters until late March and early April.

My guidance counselor told me there is some kind of agreement between colleges that they will not push an incoming freshman to make a decision until May 1, and asking a student to accept the scholarships (and Honors College) before that date is a bad practice but nevertheless, is done all the time. He couldn't give me any helpful advice except that "it will all turn out okay."

Has anyone else been through this? What did you do?

1.) Accept it and risk losing your deposit if you get accepted somewhere you like better.

or

2.) Inform the other schools of this and ask for a likely letter if your acceptance seems clear. This probably won’t happen, but it’s worth a shot.

or

3.) Ask for an extension to the universal deadline of May 1st

“My guidance counselor told me there is some kind of agreement between colleges that they will not push an incoming freshman to make a decision until May 1”

your counselor is correct. Just send the safety school an email[ CC your counselor] that you cannot sign any legal agreement at this time, as you are waiting to hear from other colleges. Tell them you are grateful for their offers and will be responding shortly after April 1.
