So, what do most guys own and wear? What do you suggest bringing to WLU and what do you avoid? Other important stuff you suggest bringing?

Haha, polos are definitely a good shirt to have :-)

Khakis; Sperrys; Lacoste, RL, VV polos only; button-down oxfords....

I love the preppy look! :)

wear what you wear now :]

^ unfortunately, thats not the way it works here at Washington and Lee

guys: bring lots of polos, black and pastel colors, button down shirts (formal and casual), flip flops, semi-formal wear and formal wear for Lee Chapel and fraternity functions (and bring a bunch of it so you can change up - during formal rush you have three straight nights of formal stuff and its the same during orientation, you dont want to wear the same thing every day) and of course bring athletic wear as well

girls - bring plenty of sundresses for football games and spring term

guys and girls should bring a lot of nicer clothes - jeans dont really cut it here except for going to class

Oh boy, I'll definitely have to go shopping this summer. It's a shame I can't lounge around in my jeans anymore :-(

Orientation is mostly formal? Lol, first there's a four day intel orientation and then the regular orientation.

If I end up going I'm going to say it now, I'm still sporting my jeans and white tee shirts with baseball caps. During accepted students day, I hate to say it, but I was disappointed with what I saw clothing wise. I'm not a fan of pink polos with a purple belt on pre-torn khaki shorts with purple flip flops as I saw one kid had on. What happened to the casual college outfit? It's good to look nice sometimes, but I'm keeping my function over fashion mindset to dressing, even if it makes me a pariah

I love the way we dress at W&L! I think it stems from our embracing of tradition. Obviously it's not the only reason why I chose the school, but it played a minor part. The campus is pristine and so are the students. What's wrong with that?

Dima:

When you say semi-formal and formal wear, what do you have in mind?

To me semi-formal means a coat and tie, formal means a tuxedo!

Am I correct in assuming your version of semi-formal means Khaki pants, Button-down shirt and a Sport Jacket and Formal means a Coat and Tie?

Yes, college dad your assumption is correct. Normally I would have used your definition of formal and semi-formal (and it is the one most commonly used at W&L) but I wasn't sure what term to use to describe the khaki pants, button-down shirt (and tie) and sport jacket outfit which is needed so often here.

In fact that is probably going to be what you are wearing to more formal functions like Lee Chapel events or frat events. Occasionally you may need a suit, and fancy dress really requires a tux - though you can rent of course I think its worth it to just buy one.

So here is the plan guys:

You don't have to be in Lex until late August or early Sept depending on if you do preorientation. You get your email addresses in June. Get a facebook when you do that and check out current students photos and see what people are wearing here. (That way you get used to facebook stalking right away as well ;) - just don't friend random people and join established groups until you get here, its sketchy)

Don't completely disregard what Dima said, but don't feel the need to conform, either. I have a fair selection of polo shirts (I prefer Brooks Brothers polos though-- much nicer made), but I often just throw on my favorite band T-shirt and jeans and I'm good to go. When you go out, you don't wanna wear really nice clothes, especially at parties where there's grain-- that stuff stains like crazy. DO bring a couple blazers and dress pants for Lee Chapel, though.

There are a bunch of people here (including me) who had never done the whole preppy thing before getting to Lex-Vegas. But now I love it. A friend of mine was looking at my facebook pics today and IM'ed me asking me since when I've had all the preppy clothes.

It's a fun style, I recommend trying it instead of rebelling for the sake of rebellion - and it works well in the Lexington sun.

PS: you can never have enough ties and check out wrinkle-resistant clothing for when the one friend you have who actually enjoys ironing and helps you out is busy ;)

Why are they withholding our e-mail addresses until June? Ahhh, the agony. I just want to convert my HS facebook now! lol

Maybe so you guys don't get campus notices and information relating to this school year.
