College websites misleading?

I am a potential transfer student. I want to go to the University of Illinois (UIUC). I am currently attending another college in Illinois; it is a private school, and I am a resident of Illinois. I want to apply to the school of agriculture with a focus in agricultural economics. On the UIUC web site it says that the minimum GPA for acceptance is a 2.25. I know better than to assume anyone with a 2.25 will get in. I am going to stay at my current university for the year and start at a new school (hopefully UIUC) in Fall 2009. Can anyone help me figure out what I actually need to be a competitive candidate. Also, will I need anything else? Extracurricular, community service, campus involvement, ect. If so, how can I get involved in these things. Right now my projected GPA will be in the mid to high 3's. I will have 28 semester hours at the time I finish my time here.
To recap-
What GPA will I need to be a good Candidate?
What else could help me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

In these issues as in life, you simply need to do your best. Good luck.

Simple, yet useful. Thanks.

You might also post your query on the [Transfer Students](Transfer Students - College Confidential Forums) forum, perhaps someone there has experience with transferring to UIUC.

data in this may be of help – http://www.pb.uillinois.edu/Documents/transferchars/2007/UIUC_tchar_2007.pdf

here’s link that led me there – also has reports for prior years. [University Office for Planning and Budgeting > Data and Research > Transfer Characteristics](University of Illinois > University Office for Planning & Budgeting > Data and Research > Transfer Characteristics)

You need decent college grades and probably 2 good recommendations from your current Professor’s. Get to know your college professors–visit during office hours and participate in class. The better they get to know you and your personality and potential, the better and more personal the recommendation will be.

As you are specifically interested in the Ag school, I am going to suggest that you try to “mirror” the Ag. curriculum at your present school. If UIUC wants it’s Ag students to take specific bio, geology, research courses etc. you should take similar courses at your present college.
this way you can prove to UIUC that you are truly interested in this field of study and you are able to maintain a high GPA.
good luck.

Thank you all very much!
