College with good clarinet professor

Occ is a community college in Syracuse, ny (Onondaga community college to be exact). My dad keeps hearing from people that they have a great music program, but I don’t want to go to a community college, or so close to home.

Your dad is right OCC does have an excellent rep for a community college music program(along with Schenectady Co Community College). Since clarinet is competitive, your dad is wise to recommend it as a backup. Many of there students go on to strong 4 yr music schools. Hope your audition season goes well!

Thanks! And yes, OCC definitely has a great music program and I will audition, it’s just not my top choice. I’d rather go to a 4 year school if possible, and one that’s a little further away so that I get that “real college experience.”

Thanks for the help everyone. I just got my sat scores this morning so now I have a 1760 (1240 not including writing), just in case this helps at all. Thanks again.

If you are a really talented player and want to pursue a career, be cautious if considering a community college. It’s great to save $$ and all, but often times many of the credits don’t transfer into a conservatory or higher level performance program and having to change teachers after two years isn’t the optimum plan either.
