My D is a rising senior and is looking for a college with good graphic design program. We live in South Carolina and she wants to be close to home if possible. We are mainly looking in GA, FL,NC.SC. we can go a little further if needed. We are mainly looking for a univ. or college with good graphic design program instead of a art school in case she changes her mind later. So far she is interested in NC state the most, also maybe Bob Jones. Her SAT is 1410, ACT is 30 and a GPA around 4.7. Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Clemson? D’s friend did that and ended up with internship with Disney.
We visited Clemson last week. They have Graphic communications not graphic design. It emphasize heavily on printing. My D is more interested in the design/art part of graphic design. We may consider it just because it is a in state school and we can take advantage of Palmetto scholarship but we have concerns about the program itself although it sounds like a good career outlook.
SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) might be a good fit.
Virginia Commonwealth U in Richmond, VA has top ranked Arts programs, including Graphic Design, and is a medium sized public U with many colleges and majors. Richmond is a wonderful city with lots of great restaurants, museums, historic sites, parks, and outdoor activities.
SCAD is definitely worth a look.
Thank you for all the input. At this point, we are mainly looking for a univ. or college with good graphic design program We don’t want her to go to a art school in case she changes her mind later.
@SchoolMother , VCU is not an art school, it is a Virginia public U with excellent Arts programs, but it has many other offerings and majors to choose from, such as business, sciences, engineering, medical, etc., along with a nice honors program. They do also offer some merit aid to high stats out of state students. My youngest D applied to VCU last year OOS, and was offered $16,500/yr. She chose a different University in the end, but we were all very impressed with VCU on our visits.
Check out meadows school of the art at SMU - 6400 undergrads total and the art school has a program called creative computing combining programming and design and art. They also have a special program with the guildhall which is SMU’s game design school if you are interested in that (it has been rated #1 in the country the past few years.
