college

I am applying to cornell, and would like to know -

Does it make any difference which college you apply to?

I am interested in either Engineering or Arts and Sciences - do either of these places have the number on the other in terms of being much easier to get into? Whats the comparision like?

thanks,

ahluwalia...though Cornell Engineering looks easy to get into on paper...trust me its pretty darn tough...just check out Cornell ED of 2010...its just that only serious guys apply so their acceptance rate is high...its not like MIT where everyone applies

thanks.. well its got me thinking cos from my school last year stats were --

cornell engg - 43/74
cornel Arts/Sc - 18/64

but I'm leaning towards arts/sciences as I'm not overly keen on engineering..and hopefully I get in!

Do you know anything abt the reputation though, is one generally considered easier than the other?

Frankly i don't know much abt Cornell Arts and Sciences...but chose whichever u like, not because u think its easier to get thru...i was in the same quandry as u when i appld actually...i had to decide which univ to apply to ED...Cornell or Princeton...Cornell's engn program is much tougher to get thru than Princeton's but since i like engineering i chose Cornell and have no regrets...i'll be joinin Cornell's batch of 2010

Just follow what U want to do

hey btw are u Indian...Ahluwalia...sounds Indian to me

yeah like i said im leaning towards arts and sciences probably, no point being stuck somewhere.

alright, but do you know if there is any impression that one college is perhaps easier to get into? curious/interested..

yep Im indian thru and thru, Punjabi.

born in UK, lived in India, HK, Spore, but yeah indian. :)

College Apps Accepts %
Agriculture & Life Sciences 3,406 978 28.7%
Architecture, Art & Planning 717 160 22.3%
Arts & Sciences 9,437 2,403 25.5%
Engineering 4,563 1,734 38.0%
Hotel Administration 782 202 25.8%
Human Ecology 1,227 431 35.1%
Industrial & Labor Relations 690 222 32.2%
TOTAL UNIVERSITY 20,822 6,130 29.4%

but trust me these are not reflective of the quality of students who apply... the 38% for engn is bec just serious guys apply...

cool, thanks for that..wow 10000 applicants for Arts/Science.. thanks again..

Arts and Sciences RD is closer to 17 or 18%

don't let that scare you, many HYP applicants apply to cornell as a "safety," only to get rejected for putting no effort into the apps. Your chances of acceptance go down if you're not a good match for the school.

Everyone always preeches that you need to be a good match for the college within cornell university you apply to, and then when people with great numbers get rejected they sound so suprised. It's often because of the match issue, not in terms of ability but in terms of fit and program.

Arts and Sciences is a Liberal Arts College like Amherst, Williams, or Wesleyan, just bigger, and part of a larger university.

Similarly, engineering is an engineering school that is, like CAS, part of a larger university.

The great benefit is that any cornellian can take courses in any college.

If i wanted to double major in science and humanities, say biology and english, should i apply to CALS or CAS? Is biology major more difficult to get in in CAS or CALS? I heard that it is nearly impossible to change majors at CALS, is it the same for CAS?

I lean toward the sciences but i also like humanities..and I am also not a NY student..is it hard to transfer majors? colleges?

CAS for a science humanities double major.

transferring majors is almost too easy...you don't even pick one until after 4th semester (2nd for enginerds)

transferring colleges is pretty easy too.

You can't double major as a student in CALS. CALS only offers BSs, not BAs, so you won't be able to major in English. The bio major for CAS and CALS is the same program, but the two colleges have different requirements for graduation. If you're in the arts, you'll have to take additional classes in history, social science and world language in order to graduate. I'd say CAS is more challenging if you're a bio major because of the additional classes that you have to take. Also, it's unlikely that you're going to be able to double major in English and Bio unless you are planning on taking courses during the summer or if you're planning on staying here for more than 4 years. You have to take about 80 out of the 120 some credits you need just to fulfill the bio major.

During PreFrosh summer, i was thinking of double majoring in Bio and Math. After my first semester at Cornell and after taking Bio 101 with Dr. Owens, i thought it would be a great achievement if i can survive only being a Bio major.

BTW, it is very possible to do a double major with bio, only if you are that kind of guy who gets good grades without attending any lectures!

Ive heard horror stories about Owens. Dont let him scare you away from the major.

If its easy to transfer colleges and change majors etc,

why shouldn't one apply Engg rather than CAS?
