Hello, I am a Freshman in high school with a a 2.8 GPA, the university I would like to attend is: Florida State University or University Of Miami Is there any way that I could raise my GPA, and what are there GPA requirements.
UM and FSU are pretty selective. You’re still a freshman so you still have time to raise your gpa. Remember you can always go to a community college and then transfer to a 4 year. UM, FSU, and other universities accept a lot of transfer students.
Study harder, don’t goof off, do what the teachers tell you to do.
The first thing you must do is determine the source of your problems. Is your GPA so low because you aren’t trying in school, or are you having trouble keeping up with the material?
If you aren’t trying, then you need to find reasons to motivate yourself. You obviously want to go to a four-year university, so push yourself to do better and have the opportunity to go to such a school. You won’t be able to get into the schools you mentioned with a 2.8 GPA. The good thing is that you are only a freshman, so you have plenty of time to improve. Look into the material for next year a little bit early over the summer, and speak to your teachers to express your concerns and ask for ways to do better. Always do your homework, don’t miss class, and participate in discussions.
On the other hand, if you are struggling because you are having a hard time understanding the material, then you must seek help. Talk to your parents about the option of tutoring, and maybe even consider repeating your freshman year. This way you won’t feel behind next year, and you will have the chance to catch up or even get ahead. If repeating is not an option, you must find ways to keep up with your peers and to learn effectively. Talk to your teachers about your issues and always ask to meet outside of class and receive extra help. Look to your friends who are doing well for advice, and go online for additional resources to help you understand what you are learning.
Right now, you aren’t in a terrible position. You have plenty of time to improve your GPA. That said, you must make changes to allow for that improvement. I hope my advice was helpful, and I wish you the best of luck.
Thanks, its just algebra and spanish that I am really having trouble with, right now. Let’s say I graduate with the 2.8 what are some good colleges that I can get into? (And it does not have to be in Florida)
Khan Academy could help for algebra. If you graduate with a 2.8 you’ll most likely have to go to a community college. 4 year universities prefer a gpa above 3.0.
Consider retaking algebra and Spanish over the summer, but if this isn’t an option, ask your teachers for plenty of additional work and resources. Once you’ve done this, start from the beginning – make sure that you have a strong foundation going into next year. For math, ensure that you can complete each type of problem presented to you. For Spanish, study the necessary vocabulary and relearn the different tenses, sentence structures, etc. that you were taught over the course of this year. You should definitely be sure to work efficiently while also leaving plenty of time to relax and do other things.
As for which “good colleges” you can get into, you can’t get into any with a 2.8 GPA. Sure there are certainly some four-year universities that would accept you, but they would not be considered “good”. With a 2.8, your best bet is to go to community college and then transfer. However, if you finish high school with a 2.8, you likely won’t do much better in college (since you won’t have the skills to do well) and won’t be able to transfer to a “good” school anyway. Because of all of this, start giving your every effort to do well, and focus on improving your weaknesses without giving up. Like I said, you have plenty of time, so put it to good use. If you have the motivation to do well and are only struggling with two courses, then there should be no reason why you would graduate with a 2.8 GPA. Don’t put yourself in that position and, instead, change things while you can.
