College

I have a D in junior year and I plan to retake that subject on senior year. Is that unqualified for the college?

D in which class? Which schools are you targeting to apply?

probably not but, we need to know more to give you a solid answer. I’d add that a CC would remain a viable option even if you don’t successfully replace the D and it is a required class.

I got D for English 10th, i plan to retake it in senior year. My counsellor said it’s ok for college.

both CSUs and UCs are looking for 4 years of ‘college prep’ English so. in order to qualify for one of them, you will probably need to take 2 English classes Sr year. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to swap your grade… so the D will be counted in you CSU/UC GPA. What is your GPA (ideally, your CSU GPA - which is just 10 and 11 grades and excludes PE and other non-academic classes) and have you taken any standardized test yet?

@QuocTanHo: In your other thread, you stated you only have 1 year of HS English since you came to the US for your Junior year of HS. So if you got a D in 10th grade, you really only have 1 year of English as an International applicant or at an International schools which would be 9th grade? 4 years of English is a hard requirement, so you would need 3 years by the end of Senior year to qualify to apply to most colleges. You also said you will be taking 3 years of English Senior year. I think most colleges will not admit you based on trying to pass 3 years of English by end of Senior year.

Have you spoken to your HS Guidance counselor about this? Are you a permanent US resident? You need to talk to your GC and contact the colleges of interest to determine if you will be eligible to apply to this Fall or have to wait a year to ensure you pass your English courses. Also find out if you need to take to TOEFL?

CSUs are sticklers for the a-g requirements. though as an international student you may have a different set to meet. I’d find your way to your nearest CSU, bring your transcripts and ask what they recommend. I should add that most neighboring states are much more flexible.

International students have other requirements… Typically the student would need to have had his/ her native language as well as ESL while in foreign country and then ESL or English in the US. But a D would need to be retaken.
