College

I am a white female, finished Junior year (May 19th or something like that) Expected 3.79 GPA @ the end of Senior year. 700 Math, 750 Critical Reading, 730 Writing. I want to major in business and maybe minor in prelaw(not sure if you can minor in prelaw...??) College HAS to be in Virginia because of in state costs. Any suggestions for colleges I should go to. I was jw what y'all would say.

University of Virginia would be your best bet, it has an excellent undergraduate business school.

Also you should look at College of William and Mary.

Does Virginia have any tuition reciprocity agreements?

Depending on where you live in VA, UVA and William & Mary could be a match or a reach. Basically, there are a ton of students from Northern VA and the urban areas with credentials similar or better than yours (which are excellent), not so many from the more rural parts. Fortunately, GMU, JMU, Christopher Newport, VA Tech, etc, are all good launching pads for strong, motivated students looking to go to law school.

Your grades are good enough to get into some other good public universities and many private colleges with merit aid, so do your research before ruling out schoos outside VA. For example, if you visit the New College of Florida website (ncf.edu) or Rutgers in NJ, they actually will show you the scholarship you are eligible for if you plug in GPA/SAT! Dickinson College in PA offers generous merit scholarships on a competitive basis to students with 1350+ SATs.

Figure out if you'd prefer a smaller or a larger school, honestly assess how far you're willing to travel ( you may be closer to some schools in a number of other states than you are to some schools in VA) and then come back to this board with your new search criteria -- there are plenty of people willing to offer their opinions!

I live in an EXTREMELY rural town in Southern Virginia.

What town do you live in? I'm from Bristol!

From all I've read, that helps a lot in terms of admission to UVA and W &M if you have strong crednetials to begin with (which you do). I still say there are a ton of good schools in surrounding states that might be affordable via merit aid. It's worth considering, especially if a smaller school might be to your liking.

If you're majoring or taking a lot of courses in business, your distribution requirements in other areas will more than prepare you enough for law school. I would guess that MOST law school students were not pre-law in any formal sense.

I'm also from a very rural town in southern Virginia. I'll bet mine is more rural than yours.

I graduated from W&M undergrad and law. There is no reason to do anything relating to pre-law. Law schools consider those classes more of a negative than a positive. You are lucky to have such great choices in Virginia. Others are right about merit aid from private schools though. Do some research if you have an interest in going out of state. The only issue is the pressure to keep up your grades to continue to get the scholarships, but that probably won't be a struggle for you.

I'd only add 2 things: even among the VA colleges, they all have a different feel that may more or less be to your liking. And none of them are smaller schools (W & M enrolls 7,500, UVA 20,000) -- you may or may not prefer a smaller school, but there is a difference and you will never know if you limit yourself to VA public schools. (Personally, I think W & M's size is perfect, but that's probably because it's the same size as my alma mater...)

I can't stress this enough, visit a lot of schools. You'll almost surely get into VT, and you've got a good shot at UVA/W&M, but each of those places has such a different feel that there may only be one that you feel truly comfortable at.
edit: "Does Virginia have any tuition reciprocity agreements?"
Yes but only for majors not offered in state, which with Virginia's good number of universities and colleges are few and far between.

OK, what is it? Harvard (unlikely), only in VA, or NOT in VA? Your various threads are confusing. Find a good LAC you can visit for contrast, and go from there...
