Colleges commonly known by names other than their official names?

In 1996, “Trenton State College” changed its name to “The College of New Jersey”.

That may seem like a fairly unique name. Yet two different schools raised objections:

– Rutgers didn’t like it. Seems that its official name is “Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey”. Could “The State University of New Jersey” could be confused with “The College of New Jersey” ?

– Princeton didn’t like it either. Turns out that “Princeton University” was known as the “College of New Jersey” in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Could the historical “College of New Jersey” be confused with a modern school named “The College of New Jersey” ?

Despite the anxiety (Princeton actually filed a lawsuit), it turns out that nobody got confused. Everyone can tell the difference between TCNJ and Rutgers, and even between TCNJ and Princeton.

I know Sacramento State and Long Beach State are what those school’s athletic departments label their school’s sports teams as.
