But maybe they were hit by the recession so suddenly that it left them in a deep mess with no other way. A similar case was where Brandeis sold its entire art collection (valued at a few million or was it billion?)… It was so sudden and they had no other go

“No one said they’re not talented athletes, but in the grand scheme of things, no one cares about fencing, track and gymnastics.” – diontechristmas

I don’t know what colleges you are talking about, but at the state university in my hometown, gymnastics is huge.

This really depends on the geography and enviromnent of the school. I know there are plenty of schools where X sport is popular, but in another school, it isn’t.

In a university near where I live, my family and many others didn’t even know that we had one of the nation’s leading college competitors for a certain event in gymnastics until someone made an article about it in the news. LOL, and it wasn’t even on the front page.

No, it would be the truth.

That’s fantastic; 15 people care about gymnastics.

“A similar case was where Brandeis sold its entire art collection (valued at a few million or was it billion?)… It was so sudden and they had no other go”

This is new to me. Last I heard the university trustees had decided this was a no-go.

you’re right, hudson. no art has been sold and they haven’t made a final decision yet if any art will be sold. somebody should write to the ap to make a correction. (maybe i will after my finals are done.)

I don’t recall seeing that in the eligibility papers? Females can play football; they just don’t very often.

“That’s fantastic; 15 people care about gymnastics.” – diontechristmas

Can’t count very well? And you do know what they say about assuming, right? Like I said, where I’m from, and at the major public universities they compete against, gymnastics is huge.

diontechristmas, you’re really callous. Just because you don’t appreciate a certain sport doesn’t mean many other people don’t. And for the athletes in that sport, I guarantee that they care deeply.

I am very happy that sports teams are going, especially before future projects, salaries, financial aid, enrollment numbers, libraries, art, etc. I will completely agree that sports are part of the college experience for many people. I’ll also admit that I really don’t like sports. But I’m definitely happy some schools have their priorities straight - what’s more important, sports or professors? Financial aid or a new football stadium?

Sports by far. Sports instantly raise awareness. There’s a reason that number of applications rise significantly after schools do well in the NCAA tournament, bowl games, etc.

I get that sports are important in generating revenue, raising awareness of a college, and also helping students be less stressed out, well-rounded, creating a sense of community on campus, etc.

But people generally go to college to get a degree, and higher education is why universities are created. How can you think sports are more important than professors? Without profs, there’s no one to teach/research, and then there’s no classes and no one gets a degree. Doesn’t matter how good a college is at football, if it doesn’t give students degrees or classes, what the hell is the point of going there? lol. Sure you can play basketball for a couple years and have fun, but then you kind of have to get a job someday. That’s why shutting down academics, profs, classes, departments is kind of stupid. yay, we have a football team but no one to teach Chemistry! Ok, that’s not even like a college, it’s just kids hanging out and playing sports and drinking. Fun, but if there’s no academics what’s the point of coming?

To have fun, play sports and drink.

don’t know about you, but I can do that pretty much everywhere, including my hometown. in HS i played some sports, drank sometimes, and had a lot of fun, and I didn’t have to shell out $160k for it so yeah, I looked for a college where they have professors and stuff too lol

sports can definitely help a school with name recognition, although they have to be really good at that sport (a lot of people still don’t know about northwestern and wake forest, despite both being top-50 USNWRs with BCS-level football and basketball) and it helps with school spirit

usually it’s just a waste of money though.

lol I hope you aren’t serious

yep, my 2-year school only has basketball and soccer, and we have a better reputation than the other 2-year down the road with football, or even the local 4-year commuter school.

why? because the money we save is used to pay teachers, and as a result our average faculty salary is in the top 1% NATIONWIDE, at an average of $110,000. if we had more than 4 sports teams that would go down, and we wouldn’t attract the talent we do.

As a student attending MIT, perhaps I can clarify a few things.

None of our sports generate any “revenue” (if they do, its probably at most like $2k-3k total for the entire season…). MIT Students generally aren’t super enthralled about watching our sports teams… we’d rather study, party, etc. (Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if admission to all our sporting events is free)

Many of the teams that got cut are becoming “clubs.”

MIT isn’t doing this as a sort of OMG WE ARE GOING TO RUN OUT OF MONIES!!! They have roughly 7 billion in the bank. They are doing an institute-wide 3 year 15% cut on everything. Academics, research, EC’s, student life, atheletics, … everything. This is being done in anticipation of rough times in the next few years (this should be obvious), not because we’re already getting screwed.

“(a lot of people still don’t know about northwestern and wake forest, despite both being top-50 USNWRs with BCS-level football and basketball)”

Naa Wake forest has been good at basketball for awhile now. They had a good season this yr with disapointing results in tourney…and a few yrs ago I know they had CP3
