Colleges embrace online media to recruit a new generation

Nice trend-watching article in the Westchester online Journal on the extent to which social media has become a driving force in college admissions. The conclusions of a recent report, "The Game Has Changed: College Admissions Outpace Corporations in Embracing Social Media," will not come as any surprise to avid CC readers - that social media not only has arrived in college admissions, but that it has changed the process forever:

"I think if there's anything you can say about this generation ... it's that they're very skeptical about advertising. I've even heard the phrase 'immune to advertising,' " said Robina Schepp, interim vice president for enrollment at Pace, which has a campus in Pleasantville. "So I think it's wise for anyone who's in a business who wants to communicate with that market ... to work to find ways to connect with that audience in a way that is very genuine."

Thus far, research shows that blogging is the most popular new forum for college admissions departments.

Chris D'Orso, assistant director of admissions at Stony Brook University, is among those leading the charge into the blogosphere.

He began his blog about a year and a half ago as a way to give students a chance to ask questions and realize there's a person at the other end of their applications, he said.

He thinks the use of social media in college admissions is going to "snowball" in the coming years.

"It seems like the more I talk to students, inevitably they're finding us online," D'Orso said. "They're searching online, so it's important for us to be out there and be visible so they can find us."

Colleges embrace online media to recruit a new generation

Some colleges go from just blogs like Tulane to mega-elaborate blogs, message boards, online message boards, video blogs, student profiles, facebook groups like MIT (MIT Admissions: Meet The Bloggers) and Johns Hopkins (Hopkins Interactive)

There is a post on here somewhere I saw all the list of blogs that colleges have... you'll have to do a search for it however.

Here's that list

Some of my colleagues have already emailed me because we missed them...I try to keep [url=http://uvaadmission.blogspot.com/2005/07/issues-blogs-me-uva-httpuvaadmission.html]an updated list on the bottom of one of my blogs/url.

Check out UChicago's admission's blog. It's quite entertaining.
