Colleges for Conservatives/Libertarians?

Which schools do you think, based on personal experience or reliable anecdotal evidence, are comfortable places for conservative or libertarian students? I'm not asking for places where such students won't find their beliefs CHALLENGED, but simply schools where they will be treated fairly, free from onerous speech codes, classroom bullying by faculty, and social ostracism? Please post the best places you've heard about.... I edit a guide, "Choosing the Right College" (CollegeGuide.org - Home) aimed at such people, and I'm always looking for new, promising leads. Thanks!

This may not be a good sign that you have no replies! I hope people find you.

John - You maintain that at MOST schools, conservative or libertarian students can expect these forms of abuse? Come on. Put away your conspiracy theories and grow up.

Any college in Hawaii.
They love spam there!

Free from “speech codes?” From “bullying” by faculty? Social ostracism?

There are probably 500 such colleges in the US, if not a thousand. Are you really trying to find them (they are not that elusive), or are you just trying to perpetuate the dubious idea that these things happen with any kind of regularity?

College should be about having your beliefs and opinions challenged – no matter what they are or where you fall in the political, religious or social spectrum. If it is really true as you imply that in most US colleges “liberal” students are not subject to such challenge, but “conservative” students are, then you should rejoice, because that means the “conservative” kids are getting a much better education.

“faculty bullying”!!??

I love how 18-21 yr olds know so much and the 50 yr old professor that has spent his lifes work on a specific topic knows so little. AND said student-victim gets his parents to pay for it. If you know so much drop out and join the “real world”. Until then, open your mind and shut your mouth and you just might learn something. Maybe even get your parents money’s worth.

Good luck.

I think it’s ridiculous that this kid posts this and many people attack him. I have seen several other threads saying almost the say thing as John, but searching for liberal colleges. I think his concerns are valid. Most college campuses are liberal, so it’s not about being presumptuous or ignorant. Regardless of whatever political views I may hold, I think people need to lay off.

My internet is running slowly right now; otherwise, I would provide a link. Check out princeton review. They have a conservative college list.

Whoa swish, you’re starting to foam at the mouth there. If the OP is indeed John Zmirak, his credentials are fairly impressive. In fact, he’s one of those 50 year old professors you admire so much.

[Thomas More College faculty](http://www.thomasmorecollege.edu/?page_id=36)

Personally, I see no harm with the OP’s question. I am extremely liberal, but I will admit that conservative ideas were not at all welcome (inside or outside the classroom) at either my alma mater or my current institution. There’s no harm in making sure one has the ability to express oneself freely.

Anyone denying the leftward leanings of academia has obviously not paid attention to the treatment of Ahmadinejad at Columbia (including a classless introductory attack by Bollinger himself), David Horowitz at Duke, Tom Tancredo at UNC, etc.

The OP is spam but University of Chicago is the libertarian capital of the world.

^that’s only Chicago’s econ dept (you’ll find the same to be true at several other top econ departments). The rest of UChicago undergrad and profs are really liberal like almost all other top univs.

"I love how 18-21 yr olds know so much and the 50 yr old professor that has spent his lifes work on a specific topic knows so little. "

You’re the one who needs to shut up and learn about the world. What makes a prof. who has spent 27 years studying the mating habbits of wild hogs or how the nuances of literary works of the 15th centuary reveal the everyday life of the people of their time qualified to be authorities on political philosophy. Not that SOME can’t, but come on…recent elections show that the country is about split 50:50, yet 95%+ of Ivy League profs self identify as democrat or liberal.

How is Ahmadinejad liberal? Allowing such a radical religious fundamentalist to speak should bump up Columbia’s ranking.

this is inaccurate, while 95% might seem liberal on the surface, an anonymous survey would show otherwise. At Columbia at least 20-25% of the student body is republican or conservative, and Columbia is known to be a liberal school. Another 5-10% is libertarian and decidedly not liberal. When you meet these people they usually just appear liberal (I’ve been baffled on multiple occasion). All top colleges are liberal but more like ~70% or so rather than 95%. For professors outside the econ department it’s more like 85-90% are liberal.

To answer the OP’s question directly, instead of ranting about the split in politics in this country…let me say this.

The book he edits is a valuable resource for kids who are centrists, right of center, religious or simply those who appreciate a balanced view. Simply, its an excellent resource for yet another perspective on the college experience.

I will posit that Fordham is such a school, and I know its in his book and basically written up as a balanced “green light” school, meaning, its not a leftist politically charged school. In fact, Fordham is rather benign politically. There are democrat and republican clubs for the kids who choose to “get involved” in party politics, but most kids are more interested in their courses, professors, classmates, dorm life, sports and just being in New York. You can find friends of all political views at Fordham and many who share divergent views. In other words, its not an “us versus them” kind of school. Do they discuss politics and have arguments? Sure. Like all colleges. But the vast majority of professors are very fair about grading. My kid has had some clearly left leaning professors who were extremely fair about grading and some who wrote on papers, “I disagree with your position, but this is a fine paper and deserves an A!”

Fordham has kids from all over the country and different countries, which makes them diverse politically as well as socially. And that is all kids should really care about.

I wouldnt want to attend a college which is biased in the extreme to the left or the right. That is not a “collegial” environment, that is “indoctrination.”

I’m not going to list “the usual suspects” of “extremism.” Just my two cents on one suggestion for the editor.

“95% of professors are liberal!!”

Maybe they are that way because they are in a profession that is not about chasing a dollar, helping others and the greater good, have more knowledge than the general public.

There is a reason that all the monuments in DC are for liberal Presidents. “Liber” (latin for book) is the root for Liberal, library, and liberty. Turn off Fox News and read for a change. It might help you make more sense of the world. You are obviously very confused about the reality. Good luck.

Rhodes College
Centre College
University of the South - Sewanee
Vanderbilt
Sweet Briar College (women’s college)
Emory & Henry College
University of Tennessee

These schools have low gay acceptance, and can thus be said to be conservative.

Love,
A lesbian Tennesseean who can’t go to college in-state because of people like you :(

To the OP-

Definitely NOT UNC-Chapel Hill. Liberal students here are rabid and pretty intolerant, and some faculty are the same way.

Maybe Wake and/or Davidson?

To swish:

Glad to see that you are so “tolerant” of the intolerance that conservatives are subject to at universities across the country. For being a “liberal”, your attitudes sure are hypocritical. Believe it or not, half of this country is conservative and the fact that this half is routinely discriminated against by university professors should be alarming to anyone who truly believes in liberty. But, like most hypocrites on the far left, as long as Republicans are being tortured you’ll call no foul.

I’m sorry I said “people like you”. That was mean. I’m just upset about having to leave my hometown–and home STATE–on account of something so trivial. Talk about intolerance.

I hope my list was a help.

George Washington = liberal??
