Hi, I know I do have quite a while until I have to apply for/select colleges, but I was wondering which universities offer the best Arabic programs. I’ve currently been studying Modern Standard Arabic with some Levantine Spoken Arabic, and my teacher told me that since I caught on so quickly, continuing Arabic throughout the rest of high school would likely make me fluent in the language. Therefore, I was wondering which colleges offer the most advanced Arabic study programs so that I would be able to advance farther in the language.
Others with more knowledge will pipe up, but there are schools known as “Language Flagships” you may want to look at.
Columbia University has a very strong Arabic studies program
Middlebury highly ranked for its language programs
You take it during the January term as well as the normal semesters
During J term you have it every day as your only class
There is an Arabic House as well as Arabic table in lunch room where only Arabic can be spoken
Good luck
Cornell, seconding Columbia.
I have a MA in Middle East Studies from an ivy league school. If you are looking for deep Arabic programs, where you can do dialectic work after, the following schools would be good: Columbia, Penn, NYU, Harvard, Texas, Michigan, Chicago, and Georgetown. The main MSA book that everyone uses is out of Georgetown. If you are just looking to do just MSA, you can find that at most top 100 schools. I went to Northeastern, knew lots of people in my program at an array of state schools (UVA), LAC’s (Bard, Middlebury), and other private larger universities.
