Colleges for Musical Theater Major - Part 37

mt pop, thanks for the info. lauren has actually been accepted at ocu for theater performance, but not for mt. we're going to audition again in february for mt. but, jst looking into other possibilities. we're pretty sold on ocu and will probably go there regardless. but, just don't want to miss any other good possibilities. too bad there are no more good programs in this region. we're just not ready for lauren to be so far away. jamie

mrsark87 - We are in Arkansas and my son is only a junior, but you could see my detail of all the programs we have visited if you look back to late Nov. (and can find my posting in the new format). Besides OCU, if I were you, I'd DEFINITELY look at Webster - very impressive. Also, I wouldn't worry about the senior showcase, as my info. after visiting Elon and OCU is that their graduates are getting work without the showcase. OU will tell you the same thing. They all bring people from the business to campus to see their students.

Sam Houston - This school and Southwest MO State (Springfield) were on our possible list due to proximity, but we have not decided to look at either of them (we've looked at many already and can't do all on list). I have sometimes read Sam Houston State on bio's of people in shows. Also, the Broadway Theatre Project (summer program in Tampa) is holding auditions there in Feb. and we considered going, but we're now looking at OCU for summer instead. Also, a husband and wife who teach theatre at our local university recommended Sam Houston State for my son when we mentioned to them that no college in Arkansas offers musical theatre. They believe Sam Houston has some of the best choreography anywhere. They must be very strong in dance. Since dance is not my son's primary focus (although he is certainly in training), we have not decided to go there to look.

In Oklahoma, we visited OCU, OU, and Tulsa. We were very impressed with OCU. OU is probably the next best, but we have mixed feelings about it and have heard both positives and negatives both from this forum and someone we know who went there. I have been in touch with a mom of a current student who is happy there. It is worth a visit for you. We have a friend who is a freshman MT at Tulsa and happy there, and we are considering it as a possible safety school. My previous postings on this forum would tell you more. It is not at the top of our list, but we love our friend there, who is one of three who signed up for the MT program in this year's freshman class. They would require an audition in Feb. if you wanted to be considered for a scholarship, but no audition is required for admission. You might want to go visit.

Lastly, as a graduate of TCU myself (in business - not fine arts!), I would recommend that you look at TCU. They have a wonderful music program and a good theatre dept. They also have an exceptional dance dept. that I think is mainly known for modern dance. Under the theatre program, they offer a major that focuses on musical theatre. An audition is not required for admission but only for scholarship consideration. We are considering this as a safety school also and have a visit scheduled for Feb. 21, a day my son has out of school. They have a "Monday at TCU" program that we'll be attending. If you all decide to go that day, let's communicate on how to meet.

Good luck to you.... Ericsmom

to ericsmom: thanks so much for all the good info. i've read virtually every post in here so i have read all that back info. btw, we are from arkansas. my husband's job brought us to the dallas area 8 years ago. but, we both grew up in ark, he in little rock and i in a very small town called augusta, 80 mi northeast of little rock. then, bill and i lived there as a family for 18 years before moving here. we still have all our family there and go back often. just trudged through the snowstorn dec 22 to get there for christmas. got caught on i-30 and couldn't get through, drove through the ditch/median and drove back to arkadelphia to spend the night. lauren will probably attend ocu. we visited there and liked it a great deal, plus it's not too far from us. she's been admitted into the theater performance program with scholarship. and can pull in all the mt curriculum, plus continue to audition. we're also scheduled to audition again in february. feel like we know a little more about what they are looking for and have high hopes. so, we'll see. but, thanks to you all for the input. this website is truly wonderful. jamie

How many of you will be out in California for the Unifieds in LA in February?

Maybe this would be a good time to link up.

I, too, have decided to post twice on the MT theatre thread....the new format will take some getting use to...I just hope that it doesn't splinter too much where we lose our thread of converstation...perhaps we can sustain this one for some continuity.

If anyone would like to know anything about Webster University's Conservatory program please post or email me. I would be more than happy to correspond with you. Webster was listed by the NY Times as one of the most under-rated programs....it truly is a top knotch program. One of it's most famed alumni is Norbert Leo Butz....FYI, Webster has one of the highest percentages of working alumnis in the entertainment field.

Break a leg to those of you auditioning for your programs....keep your heads high....you are embarking on an incredible journey....many of your non-theatre classmates haven't a clue the hoops you have to try to jump through in order to get into the college you want. Whether you succeed or are declined...you did it, and you will be better because you tried!

Warmly,

SUE B

Seems like a lot of us are concerned that the new format will "splinter" our conversations. So, why don't all of us just not start any new threads? Let's just go from 37 to 38 to 39 ... the way we always have. Sorry Roger, but I don't think any of us mind reading posts that may not be "general" in nature.

Wow...I go away for a few weeks and come back to a whole new board! I want to say thanks to all of you for your kind words a few weeks ago...you know who you are. We are rejuvinated and going to audition for Syracuse tomorrow in L.A. I know this is a long shot, but is anyone else going? We will post on how it went next week.

WCT - We will be at the L.A. unifieds in February.

i agree with "mtpop." we can just keep our posts here. i, too, like to just read everything and don't want to have to check several different topics to see if there's anything new. it's just like a running conversation among friends with the same interest and we're all interested in anything that comes up. j

catsmom-

Let's keep track how many from our "group" are going to be in CA in Feb. and try to meet up while you are all there. I wouldn't mind driving up to LA just to meet up with you guys. I will have several students auditioning there at that time and was thinking of being there for moral support anyway.

Soooo.... Are we all just boycotting the new forum? I like it... But, if everyone else doesn't, I'm all for keeping it the same & posting on this thread. :-)

Best,
K

I like the new forum setup, but this has been such a collegial group I hate to see arguing about anything, boycotting discussions, etc - - it's a girl thing.

I doubt anybody is boycotting. Methinks some of the more “senior” posters are having a hard time navigating in. ;) Hopefully, they’ll find their way back.

I think you could still use THIS for everyday chat, etc, whatever questions and discussions arise from that...

BUT for the people that are just coming into the world of the massive MT threads, they can post new questions and all of you with qualified answers can reply. I know it's quite a handful to read all of the threads. Maybe? Maybe not.

My middle-aged brain really appreciates having the topics sorted. So I'll probably read all the threads, but at least I'll deal with one topic at a time.

Speaking as one of the old farts that our dear Thesbo kindly referred to as a "senior" (lol ;-) ), don't be so quick to assume it's only the seniors who are having trouble navigating the new thread. I happen to be the "techiest" person in my house! I always jokingly tease my husband that he can't ever leave me because I'd unplug and/or de-program every entertainment/computing/electronic device in our house and it would cost him more to have everything re-connected than it will to keep me happy. You see, I do this magical thing called "Reading The Directions." A totally novel concept to the male members of my household.

Anyway, the beauty of this new forum is that it can be all things to all of our posters. Those who are looking for a specific topic only may be able to find a separate thread and those who want to read and participate in the ongoing, more "conversational" thread as well as the individual topic threads can do that. Who said you can't please everyone? The lurkers are still out there (WE KNOW YOU ARE!!) but it seems more and more are taking the plunge and joining in. Come on in, the water's fine! The more experiences we're able to share, the more we learn.

My only suggestion might be that we refrain from posting in the thread that our moderator, Roger Dooley, used to set up the new forum unless we have a question or concern about the forum that needs his personal attention.

I like this format, now that I've bookmarked the table of contents page. Having specific topics makes it easy to skip over stuff that I am no longer interested in, e.g. summer precollege programs. On the other hand, it means that those starting out might not get the benefit of knowledge from older posters who are no longer reading that subject. I'd like to propose that if we continue with the old way, that we try to title our posts. I think that really helps, especially if you are going back and looking for something. And if your post is multiple topics, you could just use that as a title.

One thing that I think would be very useful is a link to the old thread on the old format. There's a lot of info there that especially newer users would find useful. I asked Roger if he would do that but I've gotten no response. I notice someone else has linked what I'm calling the table of contents to the FAQS sheet. Thanks. Any possibility of doing the same for the archives?

And last, just a reminder to those of you who are disorganized (like me): now is the time to be getting FAFSA and other financial aid stuff out. I notice most schools have either a Feb 1 or 15 deadline.

I've missed all this conversation. WHERE is the new thread?

CHB1005963297

You're on it! All that's been done is the old MT thread which used to be under the College Search and Selection Forum, now has it's own sub-forum, "Musical Theater Major" under the College Majors Forum.

If you look at the top of the page, you'll see the "pathway" to this sub-forum. It's in blue type.

To get to the old threads, from the beginning of this MT thread to Part 29, click on the link at the very bottom of this page. It is in white type on a gray background and reads "College Discussion Archive." You'll definitely find Part 29 still listed on the main page. The earlier parts are archived by Dates and take a little looking for. You could probably find them by doing a message search within the archive also. You can think of these parts 1 - 29 as the First Generation Thread.

CC then set up a new College Discussion forum and that's where they started MT Part 30, which was a single thread in the College Search and Selection Forum and a continuation of the First Generation Thread. Let's call this long, Part 30 thread the Second Generation Thread.

When that thread got too long and unwieldy, the moderator, Roger Dooley set up this new sub forum. He took the many many pages of Part 30 and divided them up into smaller, "bite-size" parts, and re-numbered them Part 30 - 36. They are "locked" because they are from the Second Generation Thread. What we are posting to now is the current, Third Generation Thread. It has an open, general Part 37 MT thread as well as specific topic threads started by folks looking for answers to specific questions. People can post to any of these threads or start a new specific topic thread of their own. All of the posts in all of the threads from all the "generations" are available to be read.

Hope this helps.

is anyone going to the february 18-19 auditions at ocu. we'll be there on friday, the 18th. j

Does the FAFSA only allow you to put down six school codes...I am auditioning for seven schools at the unifieds, and i've been accepted to three schools. Does anyone know what I should do in this situation? I can't guess on which schools I might receive an acceptance..Musical Theatre is not a major in which you know where you will have a definete safe acceptance...I'm sure all of you know that. I would really appreciate an answer for this question. Good luck to everyone! Is anyone going to the Chicago Unifieds...If so, I'll see ya there!
