Colleges For Musical Theater - Part 40!

Is there anyone who can give me information about the MT program at North Central College? The school is located in Naperville, IL about 30-40 minutes from Chicago. The city/town looks very quaint and rich in the arts. I realize it is not a program listed in the CC MT list but I thought someone in/near the Chicago area might have some information on the school and or program.

"Sometimes it could be as simple as they already have several tall blond sopranos, and if you are a tall blond soprano there is nothing you can do about that."

So very true. My advise to all of you auditioning this year is to remember some things are completely out of your hands no matter how well you audition! You could go in and knock their socks off...but if they do not need your type, they may not accept you. This is not all schools, but I believe you will find it is many who accept small numbers. This is the life of MT. D has been to auditions for shows where they have come in and cleared out a room by appearance only!!!

It has been months since I have visited this board and have been a little surprised about the discussions on sexual orientation. Society has changed greatly in the last ten years for gays/lesbians/transexuals to be open. The arts community has been the first to be accepting, however I suspect that there are many individuals that do not have that luxury of being openly accepted. My advice to the parents that are questioning this aspect of music theatre need to also start thinking about what they can do to change this discrimination?
I am also constantly amazed at the numbers of musical theatre programs. I know that there are certain programs that are thought to be among the "best", however I have known actors to be very successful that have not attended ANY college program, and also have known students that have attended a well known program considered to be one of the "best" and have given up on musical theatre after years of auditions and not much work. This information may not help at all...but to those students that don't get accepted at their dream school...passion and hard work may just get you where you want to be. This will not be an easy life even for the most talented, as every show will at some time close. Good luck to all. :)

Hey!
anyone find out if they got accepted into the interlochen Musical theatre program for this summer yet?

Thanks so much for re-listing the link - I am new to this and time is running short - so glad to have found this site - can’t even remember how I found it - but grateful. Have a D who is a senior and starting applications - the list has confirmed so many schools that we are already looking at and has help add a few more. She just returned from 4 wk Pre-C at Univ of the Arts and can’t wait to start her auditions - the info posted on the link is sooo helpful - Thank you!

Hi, I will like to make a master or a course in Musical theater, I have a major in music (i’m a singer) and I have been in two plays here in Mexico, but I’d like to study more. Which university do you recommend me? thanks a lot!

Hi all, so I am currently a sophmore at UCSB and I have decided that i want to pursue musical theater on the East coast. I really do not want to waste my parents money and am hoping to find a good musical theater progam that can provide me with a degree and that will atleast accept some of my units. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I am sort of in the dark here. Thank you so much!

Beee, there is a current thread for transfer students, maybe you could peruse that and get some answers.

Here is an article on Ball State’s Musical Theatre Program:
[Muncie as musical theater hot spot? | Lou Harry’s A&E | Indianapolis Business Journal | IBJ.com](http://www.ibj.com/lou-harrys-ae/2010/01/12/muncie-as-musical-theater-hot-spot/PARAMS/post/15691)

Hi, I’m really interested in an MT program that is on a “real campus.” While schools like NYU and Pace have great programs, I’ve always the girl who does everything, sports, social life, etc. And I’ve always wanted the stereotypical “college experience” while still recieving exceptional training in a field I love. Thanks!

Hi aemason. There are a lot of programs that fit your criteria. A few are UCLA, Penn State, U. Mich, CCM, Texas State, Northwestern…the list goes on and on. Look at the Big LIst of MT colleges, post 2 at the top of the MT forum.

Have a query: if a student (with a high GPA and 2160 SAT score) was interested in IR (international relations) as well as Musical Theater - would a school like Johns Hopkins suit him or George Washington Or Georgetown. I know about American but am searching for these other schools’ musical theater quality. They do have something but without going there how do we find out how good it really is?

Hard to find – please help!

I recently applied to AMDA (the American musical and dramatic academy) in NYC. I have a GPA of 2.2 in high school and a 1.5 in college after 2 semesters. (I only took 3 classes and after this semester it will be a 3.0). I know they’re not high but i wrote in my essays how I have learned and become a better student. I have lots of stage experience and acting experience and I feel like my audition went well. And i pointed out multiple times that I am determined to work hard in school. I was wondering what my chances of being accepted are! I’m so nervous!

karenmommy – when you say your student is “interested” in musical theatre and IR…is he thinking of double-majoring, minoring in MT, just having the opportunity to be cast in productions/keep a toe in? Which is the stronger pull/interest?

Do you have any opportunity to make a campus visit (good regardless of a student’s prosposed major(s)? Has the student contacted these schools to talk to the musical theatre folks?

Double majoring is hard for any program, seems even more difficult for MT, due to the number of specific courses required. There is a student attending (or did he graduate?) from the University of Michigan double-majoring in MT (an auditioned BFA program) and engineering.

Finding that perfect school is difficult. Think about all the options (even student or community theatre in the city of the school, if he wants to keep performing while pursuing a different major). Would love to hear what you find! Is the student in question a senior?

Karenmommy,

I’ve worked with many MT/theater students who also feel passionate about a 2nd area of academic interest, and choose to study both in college. Your d’s strong Academic record give her advantages. The 3 DC schools that you mentioned are all great candidates, American, GW and Georgetown all have great IR programs and terrific theater opps, acapella (show choir) opps, etc.

Also, take a look at Brown, Tufts, Vassar, Muhlenburg, Bard, Brandeiss, Boston College, all schools where she could minor or double major in an area of performing arts and audition for shows. The theater production values are very high at these schools.

To research, take a look each school’s theater/performing arts page on the college website. See what shows were performed in recent years and what is upcoming for this year. Do not be bashful to call the theater depts and speak with department heads or their secretaries. They will be happy to answer questions and give guidance. Go see shows on campus this fall/spring.

It sounds as if she is leaning toward IR and is committed to training and performance opps while in school. With drive and passion, it is doable.

@Karenmommy – I’d also add Northwestern to your list of schools to investigate. They have a top-notch theatre/MT program and many (if not most) of their students are able to double major due to the quarter system. D started on Monday, and it seems like a truly a remarkable school.

ANy first hand knowledge would be greatly appreciated. We’re interested because they have
many other study potential (in other areas) at their fine liberal arts college.

At Northwestern, he may want to apply ED to them and we wanted to see if we’re in the balllpark… I agree it is a great school

I’m traveling, but sent you a pm… hope that helps and feel free to ask if you have other questions!

Hi, wrote you a private message but i think he’d love Brown but afraid an ivy is a reach - really, for him… he also loved U Penn which we visited and saw a production - (a small drama);
since he is not able to go to Vassar, how is Bard exactly? he has an interest in writing and perhaps playwriting, so it seems good but I know nothing about that school. and Tufts - what is that college like? It is a “city” school? what is theater like there? and how much do you know about these? and how do they compare with Muhlenberg?
another one i know nothing about… (sorry, this makes my PM even longer!)
