Colleges for Musical Theatre-Part 38

Thanks Roger! My goodness, where has everyone been lately? Busy auditioning I would imagine!

SUE B

Hi. I am a junior and am trying to decide where to audition next year. Can somebody tell me which colleges and conservatories will consider you for both MT and acting in the same audition? I know Tisch, Carnegie and Otterbein will. Are there any others? My school only allows us to apply to five colleges and I need to make the ones I choose count. Scary huh?

This is such a cool thread! I started reading it over winter break and just got to the end.

OCU and Illinois Wesleyan both will allow you to. How can a school restrict you to 5 colleges? They can suggest, but how can they have the authority to restircy you?

Syracuse too

Tripletreat,

Florida State will also allow you to be considered for acting at your MT audition. You might also look into schools that have acting and MT auditions on the same day. Even though you might have to go to different rooms and do two different auditions you could do them the same day. I know that one of my D's friends auditioned for both acting and MT on the same day last year at Michigan. She was accepted as an acting major, but not accepted into MT. I believe that CCM sometimes schedules MT auditions on the same day as acting auditions.

By the way, I like your posting name. Triple Treat sounds so much nicer than triple threat. Singer/dancer/actors are a treat!

Thanks everybody. So ... I have Tisch, Carnegie, Otterbein, OCU, Illinois Wesleyan, Syracuse and Ithaca. Any more? I think I want to go without a nonaudition safety and have my fallback be one with a good BA program where I can reaudition the next year.

Cato, They can't tell us we can't apply to more than five, but they can restrict the guidance counselor on her recommendations ... probably at her lazy request. Very lame considering it is an art school with barely over 100 seniors. This year's drama kids are going to get around it by doing walk in auditions when they go to Chicago which still sucks because it will cut some of them off from scholarships they might get at some places if they applied early. I doubt they will have the nerve to refuse to let somebody send in a late application if they don't get in anywhere they have applied to and do get in somewhere on a walk in.

Dancersmom, Thanks. I couldn't believe it was available! :)

Tripletreat: I would write to some of the schools you are interested in and explain that your school is refusing to do more than 5 recommendations and ask what they suggest you do.

Is it a private school? If it is, parents pay the bills and can put a lot of pressure to bear to change that policy. And if it is a public school, I suggest you get together with the other juniors and write a letter to your school board and superintendent and principal, and any other politicians you think would be helpful, explaining why this policy is penalizing you. Besides, they just send out the same letter each time. My D is in a public school with over 500 seniors. And they don't have such a ridiculous policy.

Tripletreat, one more thing: Check out Drake in Iowa. My D used it as her safety: they have a BFA in MT with no audition, and also rolling admission, so you can apply early. I think there's also a school in Flordia that doesn't require an audition. You might also check out American--theirs is a BA and does require an audition but I don't think as many kids apply.

Does anyone out there know anything about Drake?

tripletreat,
Add Penn State to the list where you can audition for both a BA in theatre and a BFA in music theatre. I believe they have one audition day in common, usually the first scheduled audition sometime in November.

All schools will require a transcript and test scores, but my experience this year is that alot of schools don't require guidance counselor recommendations. You can pribably apply to alot of good schools and not go over the 5 recommendations quota.

Good luck to you. It's hard enough without your own school putting up obstacles.

Referring back to what 5pants said at the beginning of this thread:

I don't know where everyone is! This board used to be so lively. I would read the new messages, leave the computer, come back fifteen minutes later, and there would be a bunch of new messages already.

It's kinda sad, but I think the new format may have caused the negative spiral in messages. Maybe there are members who are not sure where the MT board went?

I don't think many of the colleges D applied at last year required GC recommendations. Which is good because I don't think GC really knew which one she was!

For some reason, every teacher that gave her a recommendation actually gave her two copies. One was sealed in an envelope with their signature across the seal. The other was a copy for herself. She was able to read what every teacher wrote. This came in very handy when we had to get her admitted to Millikin very quickly. Instead of getting a GC rec, I was able to fax them references from her Humanities teacher and her voice teacher. (Note to parents: There is nothing that makes this all worth while than reading a recommendation a teacher wrote about your child.)

Another thing that our GC office did that helped a lot was when she asked for the first copy of her transcript, they asked her how many copies she wanted. She asked for, and received, six copies, all in sealed & signed envelopes. This way, when she applied to a college, we were able to personally send in the transcript, thus knowing for sure it went out!

Just our experience,

One of the complaints I have read, and I have, with CC is a lack of spell check. This is what I figured out today.

After you type your message, if you copy the entire thing into a Word document, you can run spell check there. (To copy your message, right click, pick "select all", right click again, select "copy", then open up Windows and "paste".)

I hope this makes sense. All I know is I am thrilled to be able to double check my typing!

Peg

Cato and Peggy, Do you remember which ones did not ask for GC recs? I don't know if they restrict from sending out transcripts or not but it is worth a try. I could sue to get the rule changed! <eg> Sooooooo ... I know I want to apply to CMU and Otterbein. Tisch is too expensive and I doubt the parentals would let me go there anyway. After that I have OCU, Illinois Wesleyan, Syracuse, Ithaca, Florida State, Penn State and Drake to choose from. Then there is CCM which I won't touch with a 10 foot pole after what I have read here and heard from other people. I'm looking for more if anybody knows of any. That is enough to get a good start. This board is so helpful! Most kids from my school go for straight acting so it is cool to find a place for MT. Thanks!</eg>

D applied to seven different schools. There's no way I can keep any of them straight! If I remember right, Otterbein was fairly easy to apply to. U of Mich was a huge hassle. If I had to guess, CMU doesn't care about GC rec.

Speaking of which, if NYU is too expensive, double check the price of CMU before you apply. I think they were about the same cost. ($43,000 a year sticks in my mind). OSU and Otterbein both gave nice merit scholarships.

Peg

According to my records, but please double check.

No GC recommendation:

Otterbein
Point Park
SUNY buffalo, fredonia (requires a signature but not a rec, I think)
Marymount Manhattan
Univ. of the Arts
Hartt School (U. Hartford)

GC rec required:
BW
Ithaca
Emerson
NYU
Penn State
Syracuse

Counselor recommendations

Here's the list I kept of counselor requirements when we were researching schools. I hope that it's accurate, but you can research each school individually for more information:

University of Oklahoma Not required
University of Cincinnati Form required
Oklahoma City University Not required
USC Counselor form required
Penn State Form required
Otterbein College Yes, no form
Webster University Not required
University of Miami Form required
Syracuse University Form required
University Michigan Form required
Wichita State Not required
Emerson College Form required

I hope that helps.

No GC recommendation for OCU, U of Arizona, Arizona State(although it is a BM program where I don't think you can audition for acting at the same time)

Correction

It doesn't look like Otterbein requires a counselor recommendation.

Hi Tripletreat...
Just had to respond to your comments about which schools you are interested in and that CCM was not one of them due to the negative comments you had heard.. We have a freshman in the program at CCM this year who is extremely happy with his decision. He is learning so much, is working very hard, and feels that the CCM MT program is absolutley top notch. The faculty, facilties, frequent master classes, and additional opportunities to get excellent training in all areas (dance, acting and voice) are the best. Also, the students are terrific; there is a strong sense of belonging - and comraderie.
The decisions are tough when it comes to school considerations, and if you are serious about MT, I just had to give you another opinion regarding CCM. Our son had also been accepted to some other excellent programs (CMU (about $46,000), BoCo and U of Miami) and agonized over the decision prior to accepting the spot at CCM.
Of course, you need to find the right fit for you -- but just wanted to share an extremely positive experience regarding CCM.

Good luck!
