Do colleges google applicants? Is this not illegal to an extent?

I don't believe it's common, but instances of it have been reported. That's why people have been seriously admonished to be careful of what they post on their Face Book pages, and other blogs. It's supposedly cost more than one teen a college admission and gotten them into trouble with other authorities.

Is it illegal? No in the least. Is it illegal for you to google anyone you might be interested in learning more about?

bookworm, elite private schools get 18-20,000 applicants. Publics get a lot more. Do you really think they have the time to google applicants?

You're lucky if they spend more than 10-15 minutes reading your application.

While Adcoms may not google 18-20000 applicants, you know that saying about if something sounds too good to be true... The internet sometimes just makes it easier to corroborate some of the statements made by applicants. (Keep in mind that there are a number of admissions representatives who post right here on CC).
