Colleges I should Consider/ Chances

I have a few schools in mind, but I really want to attend a decent school in the northeast or the midwest. Any schools that you think would fit my profile AND that I realistically have a chance of getting into?

SAT I (breakdown): Didn't Take Yet.
ACT: 29 (30 superscore) 35E 31R 28M 25S
SAT II: 750 World History (will be taking American History this June)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 10/140 (?)
AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (5) (self-study) will be taking American History & AP English Lang this year. Most likely 4-5 APs next year.
IB (place score in parenthesis):N/A
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Runner-up for a statewide scholarship sponsored by the United States Senate, numerous school awards.
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Class of 2013 (President), School Newspaper (Founder/ Editor-in-Chief), National Honors Society, Social Studies Brain Bowl Team (Founder/ President/ Captain), Student Ambassador to an organization in my county that consists of about 30 towns and cities and their elected officials.
*Just an FYI my school is doesn't have sports because it is too small.
Job/Work Experience:Web Designer & Operations Assistant at a sports management company (basically the boss's assistant) (15-20 hours/ week)
Volunteer/Community service: Helped start a basketball program for little kids at my church (2-3 hours week); 270 service hours

Will Apply for Financial Aid?: Probably not.
Intended Major: History OR Business
State (if domestic applicant): Florida
Country (if international applicant):N/A
School Type: Public Magnet
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: <$100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
General Comments:
Thank you for your time :)

How big/small do you want? Any restrictions on geography? No need for financial aid?!?

This is a broad range of outcomes (reach, match etc)

Boston College
Villanova
American University
University of Richmond
Indiana University
Michigan
Carnegie-Mellon (math/science scores could be a killer here)
Miami (Ohio)
Penn (Wharton big reach for anybody)

University of Miami
Wake Forest

That’s a broad first cut. Good luck.

Thanks…probably cut out University of Miami because I live pretty close to there and Carnegie-Mellon isn’t a fit because I have absolutely no interest in Engineering. But I don’t really know much about Carnegie-Mellon’s other programs.

CMU has a very good business school; I don’t know about the quality of their History offerings.

What can your family afford to pay? You should have at least one in-state school so you can take advantage of Bright Futures.

I’d really work on the ACT or try the SAT. A few more points would put much better schools on the list.

Take SAT Subject test Math II and score over 700, it will strengthen your transcript

Thanks everyone!

@waverly: Might take tests again, but already studied extremely hard…just not a good test taker!

@Battllo: I don’t think a 700 on the Math II is going to happen :frowning: !! Definitely not a math person!!

You don’t really have much of a chance at Carnegie Mellon with a 30 ACT and considering your math and science scores. Wharton I would say you simply have no chance unless you can get your ACT up to about 34+. The rest of the schools Vinceh mentioned are good matches IMO, some of them are obviously safeties.

Yea haha Penn and Carnegie Mellon were never really on my original list…not really that interested in them anyhow.

Also consider NYu stern

That’s the business school?

Carnegie Mellon has a top 10 undergraduate business school (Tepper), which would be a reach for you though based on your stats. The university also offers a History major within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is less selective than the business school or the engineering school and would be a match for you.
