Colleges in BAD areas

Rice is in the museum district of Houston. Very upscale.

But you make one wrong turn, you get into shady areas.

LaSalle and Temple are both in a really bad area of Philly. The area around UPenn isn't nearly as bad.

Rutgers - Camden (NJ) is also in a bad area. Most of Camden (which is outside of Philly) is actually pretty bad, and has one of the highest crime rates in the country.

As I said above....

In addition, it's not as bad as a few years ago. Temple spent MILLIONS buying up the land around campus and will turn it into a megaplex with theatres, food, shopping, housing, etc.

Sorry, jPoD, I didn't read through the whole thread before posting as my Internet connection is pretty slow. But, you're right that those areas are actually benefitting from having those schools there. Really, any school in a bad area can make that area even a little bit safer. And there are far worse areas to live in that don't have any schools in them.

My mom went to USC, we live near USC and Koreatown, and trust me, USC is in a bad neighborhood. USC owns alot of space around the campus, so there IS a "moat" of sorts. But don't kid yourselves uschicksa and MrTrojanMan, it IS a bad neighborhood. If one is careful and doesn't place oneself in risky situations, then it is fine. Don't defend it because you go there. I am going to Trinity and know that the neighborhood isn't very good...I'm not in denial.

Areas made me nervous. I was looking at one school surrounded by slummy areas. It was enough to make me write it off my list. And when I went to Mount Union, I thought I was in safe neighborhood based on what surrounded the college. Then I went down the street a bit and had to change my mind about that. Another reason I left.

Where I go to school now is located in a suburban neighborhood. There is a nun house next door, a hospital two properties down. The rest of the surrounding area is middle class homes.

I'm from a more urban area to begin with (though I moved to the suburbs in late 1995) but I was from a very safe part of the city. I have street smarts, but I never had to use them much (except crossing the street--all my suburban friends had no idea how to look both ways). Still, if I had been about four miles south of where I grew up, I'd be in the crime zone.

LOL, whoever said UMD is on crack, it's definitely not up there with Hopkins or UPenn or USC...

UMD isn't in the /prettiest/ area but it's definitely safe to walk around in, haha. It's called "working class" people, just because you're a minority in an area or there's gasp houses on the highway! doesn't mean it's the freaking ghetto. In fact whenever I visit campus I stop to eat at the Pizza Hut or whatever. Good stuff.

I'm probably pretty irrationally fearless in urban areas however, as being from a little secluded suburb and venturing into "the city" i.e. Baltimore for a night at Sonar is pretty much as educated as I get. Now what's in a really bad part of town is the 9:30 club in Washington...at least I think it was the 9:30 club...now I can't remember. LOL.

Ya, I agree with above. College Park has a few pockets of really sketchy area, but for the most part it is pretty chill. And like the above poster said, they are all working class. Because they don't live in the best houses doesn't mean that they are going to mug you to make a quick buck. UMD does everything in it's power to disspell this misconception of the horrible surrounding area, but it still lingers. On campus there are blue phones everywhere and if you travel with another person you are fine. Small theft is more of a problem than violent crimes by far. JHU and UBaltimore are in downtown B-More, so that's where it gets sketchy.

USC I would say is in a bad area, not that that makes it a bad campus

Look at the reviews of students on TheU.com, and look at the marks for safety. Lots complain about it.

http://theu.com/watch/index.php?region=West&schoolid=18617

Here was one that summed it up well

As a woman in this area, when I was a freshman, I didn’t think there was any problem. I was young, and I didn’t think that anything would ever happen to me. I’ve lived downtown for 3 years, and 2 of my apartments have gotten robbed. One of my friends has gotten held up by gunpoint. But the truth is I don’t think that happens just as USC, I think it happens at every university. Because of the surrounding area, I think it is always an issue, but that happens everywhere. Because people think that is such a big deal here, the campus police are always out patrolling. We are in an unsafe area, but USC is such a confined campus. We have a gate and it’s locked. But I try not to walk alone at night. I mean it’s just a part of life.

Rutgers-Camden and Rutgers-Newark are in really bad areas. Camden is extremely unsafe, murder capital of the country. Newark is not safe at all either, we'll see what the new mayor does to try to change that

'My mom went to USC, we live near USC and Koreatown, and trust me, USC is in a bad neighborhood. USC owns alot of space around the campus, so there IS a "moat" of sorts.
well i go to USC NOW (not 20 yrs ago like your mother) and i would also like to clarify im not in denial. you see, i will never say that SC is in a good area, but i find it hard to say that SC is that bad (or atleast as bad as some think). ive seen bad, trust me. i spent a great portion of my youth in pakistan...a real *****show, not the so cal paradise you and your mother claim is a bad neighborhood.

is the neighborhood around SC bad? well, its all relative...

is it to hard for a whiny spoiled college girl who spends 6 days out of the week plastered, stoned, and coked all while rolling on X on a wens day night walking home from being sexually assulated by over metrosexually drunk frat boys with her $2000 pink LV bag while talking on her cellphone and texting on her rhinestone encrusted sidekick 3 and listening to her $400 video ipod at 2:30 in the morning...all the while with only one high heel on? hell yes, criminals like easy targets. too hard for normal people like myslef? hell no, b/c i walk around with the confidence that criminals are usually more scared then their victims. should that keep whiny girls form going to urban schools? no, its a good lesson when you see what you take for granted. but you laways have the choice of staying safe and sheltered in fantasy land.

DO NOT for ****s sake think that the worst parts of america can even compare to the worst of the worst parts of the rest of the world. a long time ago my dad moved my family and i from pakistan to NY. LA has nothing on NY, and brooklyn was quite peacefull relative to pakistan.

i use to have a tendency to be high risk individual, wandering aimlessly towards del taco or subway for midnight munchies while intoxicated, and the worst experience ive had was when a 12 yr old sissy boy said he would stab me if i didnt give him my bike. poor kid, ive never seen somebody so shocked after being slapped in the face. the worst ive heard from friends is of a shoot out while a guy was fighting a mexican kid who was trying to steal his bike. but that involved a group of drunk frat guys and local youths, not a combination you woud see every night. i have yet to see an altercation between locals and studenst with my very own eyes, and i only once heard of one. there was a murder of a SC student posted here once. but that occurred a significant distant from USC, and therefore irrelevant. tell me if someone gets killed miles away from harvard in a shady area in boston, would it because they went to harvard?

I'm sorry but I just have to say this. Some of you guys in this thread are straight up pu$$ies. I can understand a female being a tad bit scared in sketchy areas...but some of you guys really need to man up and grow some nuts. I'm not saying you have to be a thug or anything but God, whatever happened to men being the strong protectors of society

it'll be a sad day when men begin carrying around mace

A2Wolves6, you are so right. USC is NOt a bad campus, it is a gorgeous campus and campus security is tight. But MrTrojanMan is not realistic in comparing anything to life in Pakistan. The U.com says it all....surrounding area is a "D". MrTrojanMan, we live near there also. It is bad.

How can you be MrTrojanMan and not be wandering aimlessly to Fatburger?

I think you blew your cover.

Im talking about the side of DC that UMD is on, granted its not in DC but that part isnt too safe...its actually the section that has the 930 club I think. I didnt say it was on crack though..although I probably should of left out the 'to say the least' :) And you guys think JHU's area is unsafe? Believe me you want to be downtown, that or the inner harbor is your safest bet...I find Homewood and the surrounding areas to be alright. And Sonar isnt really unsafe anymore...the only thing that made it unsafe were all the drunks filtering in and out of Hammerjacks, but since they closed down...

I plan on carrying a pistol.

Check www.packing.org to find out if your eligible to carry a firearm for self protection.

Hell, if my name was Gatman I would too :P

your just not getting it. ill repeat just one more time:

is the neighborhood around SC bad? well, its all relative...

Birmingham-Southern College

You're right I don't get it. How could you would rather go to Subway than Fatburger?
