I'm visiting NYC for spring break to go on college visits. Right now I'm thinking of visiting NYU, Marymount Manhattan, Fordham, Pace, Long Island, Eugene Lang, Columbia, and possibly Adelphi, Hofstra, Iona, Kean, and Wagner... do any of these jump out to you as somewhere I should NOT visit because of whatever reason? There are also schools like AADA, AMDA, Circle in the Square Theatre School, and Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute- do you recommend these? What are some colleges in NY you can think of that I have forgotten?

I don't see how anyone could answer this question without your mentioning what it is you want in a college. You'd have to list several selection criteria besides NYC. Then, we'd have to have some idea as to your qualifications so that you are visiting appropriate schools. Otherwise, all we can do is list the names of colleges that are in or close to NYC and you could find that in any book.

Given your post about summer MT intensives, I am guessing you want to go into MT? If so, several schools on your list are not known for musical theater and only a few are. Of the ones you listed where you could study MT.....that would be NYU, Marymount Manhattan, Pace, and Wagner. A BA school that offers a lot in the way of MT would be Muhlenberg. You could look at Manhattanville. Right now, your list looks haphazard in trying to see ANY college in the NYC area, as opposed to finding colleges that match specific selection criteria, as well as your qualifications. For example, I can't imagine someone who is interested in Columbia University that would also be interested in Iona, Kean, or Long Island CW Post. Not only is Columbia SO different than those, the qualifications to get in varies VERY WIDELY between them. I also can't imagine someone who wants to go to Columbia as also interested in AMDA. Same with NYU and AMDA.

I suggest that you list your selection criteria and find schools that match it. I also suggest that you put your qualifcations up against the published stats of admitted students to each college and choose ones in your ballpark.

If you are interested in MT (this is a MT Forum after all and you are applying to MT summer programs), you need to decide if you want a BFA or a BA and your list above is all over the place and many do not even offer MT. If you are serious about MT, I hope you will not limit your search to just schools in NYC. That would be a big mistake in my opinion.

Lastly, you mentioned 16 schools. I realize you have a week. However, in order to do an adequate visit that doesn't just focus on seeing buildings, you need to spend a day at each school or at least a half day. So, fitting in 16 schools and exploring them adequately is not likely.

I agree with soozievt. You need to decide what you want from a school as far as training and/or the ability to take classes outside of your major and determine if you want a BFA or a BA. Then look at the websites for the schools and see what the classes are for a major in MT (it sounds like this is what you are interested in).

My D (hs junior) and I visited colleges last summer in NY, PA and CT. Before our trip she had reviewed the websites for the schools and come up with questions. Although we did not get to see any of the schools in session, we did meet with many of the head faculty for the MT Departments.

Also even though you have a week, I don't think you can visit all of these schools. Most schools have a general campus tour and information session, then if you set up time with the MT Department heads and if you visit any acting or dance classes at the schoools, I don't see how you could do more than 2 schools per day.
