Hi everyone. I am in high school still, and one of my favorite schools is the University of Texas, but I am not too sure of getting accepted there. I want to either get certified to teach, or major in accounting or finance. Something involving teaching science or working in business. There are some colleges in Ohio I like from Ohio State to MAC schools, so could anyone tell me information and anything you know about these following colleges in Ohio. I know enough about Ohio State…
University of Cincinnati
University of Akron
Kent State University
University of Dayton
University of Toledo
Bowling Green State University
I think it’s great that you are interested and that you are starting to do your research early, I’m assuming you are a junior or sophomore?
Your question is too open ended. Your best bet is to start looking at the websites of the colleges you listed above. Then, go to their specific forums here on CC and ask your specific questions. Many people here on CC are very helpful, as long as you do some of the work yourself. As you do more research and ask more questions, you will be able to narrow down your list of Ohio colleges to the ones that feel best for you.
In addition to your list above, I would add Miami University (Oxford, OH) and Ohio University (Athens, OH).
I can’t comment on these schools, and I don’t know your stats, but since you are still in the brainstorming stage of your search, I will suggest that you also look into Miami University of Oxford, Ohio. It has a strong business program and a picture-perfect campus (if that appeals to you at all.)
You may know this, but U Dayton is a private college, whereas the others on your list are publics. It is a good school and offers some nice merit, but the cost will likely be considerably more than the public schools (if you are an Ohio resident).
Let’s see. As was mentioned, U of Dayton is the only private school on your list and is in a small/mid sized urban area. The rest are publics. U of Cincinnati is in a reasonably good sized urban area. It’s strong in Engineering, Architecture and is kind of Ohio’s second public university to Ohio State. It is very compact for it’s student population. The campus architecture is interesting. University of Toledo is in a mid sized city but it feels more suburban and is more of a commuter school than the others. It has a good engineering program. It has a gothic feel about it. University of Akron I don’t know as much about. It is in Akron but I don’t know whether it’s urban or suburban. It’s strong in the area of Chemical Engineering. Kent State is more a suburban school outside of Akron. I know it has a good fashion design program. Bowling Green is a college town in a rather flat farming area of Ohio. It has a good music program and I think they have a good education program.
As others have mentioned for Business, Miami University and it’s Farmer school of business is usually considered one of the top three business schools in Ohio (the others being Fischer at tOSU and CWRU Weatherhead). You might also look into Ohio University. They take a very collaborative approach to their business degrees and emphasize internships. Both are college towns with a rather quintessential college feel. They each have their own individual personality though. Miami is preppier and OU is more laid back and hippy if you want to call it that. Nearly all the MAC schools will provide a good programs in teaching. They will be more geared for teaching in Ohio. Good luck.
