Hi,

this may be a stupid question

I have been looking at a few colleges in Puerto Rico (Specifically University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez). I feel that Puerto Rico would be an excellent and affordable place to go to college. I also have Puerto Rican family living down there. However the problem is I have very limited Spanish speaking ability (4 years of HS Spanish). I was wondering if anyone could tell me if Fluency in Spanish is required in order to study down there.

Thank you

Well - it would be total immersion in the languge - which is not always a bad thing. But would bet that alot of English is spoken as well.

Out of curiosity - what are you looking at to major in??

Math...I'm pretty sure I could deal with alot of people speaking spanish around me and everything but I was wondering which language the classes were taught in.

Contact the school you are interested in would be my best advice on the language issue.

i was in puerto rico this summer...because it is a territory of the US...most people speak english and spanish...you can get by with speaking only a little spanish...and in the bigger cities...spanish isn't needed....i'm not sure what it's like at a university there however...

The fact that the university web sites are totally in SPanish should be a clue. There is nothing in English on that site. But I notice that a couple of the campuses (not Mayaguez) have immersion programs for Hispanic English speaking students from the mainland.Look at the main UPR web site.
