Colleges in UCSD HELP 9 DAYS LEFTT

does it matter which college u go to? im having a difficult time ranking them.
should the college be related to ur major? please advice!! and tell me how ur ranking them and why!! only 9 days leftt!! HELPP

Ok well there’s already been a lot written on this already recently, but I’ll sum it up for you. Yes is does matter what college you get into because you’ll have to take that colleges GEs. Use this link to look at the GEs you have to take for each college and pick the college that has the ones you want to take. Also, you can be any major in any college, but for example, if you’re an engineering major, Warren’s GE would be highly favorable, but like I said, pick the ones with the GEs you want to take.

so the college has to be related to ur major? what if it isnt? will that be bad or something? help me outttt

Muir, Marshall, Warren, ERC, Sixth, Revelle.

Warren is better for engineering, so change it to #2 if you’re an engineering major.

Just do this and you’ll be fine.

technically, it does not matter what college you go to. you could be a psychology or a mathematics major and you would still take the same major courses as those in different colleges. the only major difference is their general education courses. For instance, if you were in sixth college, you would have to take 3 writing classes, 1 math course, 1 statistics course, 1 ethnic studies course, 1 social context course, 2 social analysis courses, 2 science courses, and 2 NAHR courses to satisfy your general education requirements. However, if you were in another college such as Revelle College, then you would have to take 5 writing courses, 3 math courses, 5 natural science courses, 1 american cultures course, 1 fine arts course, 2 social science courses, and an area of focus. So as you can see, you can attend any college, its just going to one college instead of another can be beneficial because you wouldnt need to take extra classes. I am a Political Science major at Sixth College.

Is it possible to change the ranking order that I submitted on my application? If so, how?

Is it difficult to change?

Perfect explanation UCSDfan. I’m a non engineering major in Warren and I really like the GEs, so don’t think you have to be a certain major to fit into a certain college. Any major works in any college.

It’s just… difficult for certain majors and certain college GEs to go together well. If you’re in engineering, and you’re in ERC, well good luck graduating in 4 years. It’s possible, but you’ll just have a harder time doing it.

That’s why most people would go for Muir or Warren - shortest writing sequence, and Muir has the least GEs and flexible options.

Shadowkitten you are a complete idiot

don’t listen to this ■■■■■■. this guy has some hatred for sixth for whatever reason. i go to sixth and i completely love it here. i chose ucsd over ucla primarily because i really loved the atmosphere here in sixth. do i regret it? absolutely not. i put sixth as my first choice college, and i’m never looking back.

there are pros and cons to every college. erc and revelle have a ridiculous amount of GEs, while muir and marshall have the least GEs. people say sixth college is isolated, which might be true relative to the other colleges, but it isn’t a big deal. the three main places i take classes are center all, pc theatre, and warren lecture hall, all of which are relatively close to sixth compared to the other colleges. you are the closest to price center, which is basically the center of campus. in addition, you have access to ALL the buses that take you off campus. for people in erc/muir/warren/marshall, they either have to walk all the way to where sixth is or they have to take the campus loop just to get to where the bus stops are. the fact that sixth is so close to the bus stops means easy access to get off campus, aka beach, mall, grocery shopping, etc.

whichever college you choose, you’ll probably fall in love with it anyways and you probably won’t be able to imagine yourself in any other college. i love it here in sixth, and so does every1 else i know, while all my friends in their respective colleges love it as well.

^For sure. I’d say most people really like the college they pick. Nobody should tell you what college is for you. Like I said before and like I’ll say again, pick the college with the GEs you want to take.

actually if you go take the campus tour, attend any workshops, talk to admissions councilors, talk to anyone who really knows what they are talking about than you would know that they tell you to not base your college on your major.

the colleges are separated by GE’s ONLY not by major. they do that to have a more diverse population of students within each college. HOWEVER if you are a language major, or anything to do with other countries… you would end up in Rosevelt most likely because their GE’s pertain to those types of majors.

Get it? so just pick the college that has the best sounding GE’s and the best sounding mission statement and rank. mine, like many others, ranked
Muir
Warren
Marshal
Sixth
… i cant get into revelle or rosevelt as a transfer student so those dont matter

^You definitely can get into Revelle and Roosevelt as a transfer student - some of my best friends in my sorority are ERC transfers. And they do hate it because of all the extra GEs.

^ actually you sir/ma’am are incorrect. you cant transfer IGETC GE’s into revelle or rosevelt. Told that by 2 different admissions councilors.

You CAN get into them if they are absolutely where you want to be, but it will be without a lot of your transferable units.

Yeah I think it must happen because I know at least 3 girls in ERC, transfers, who have to redo a lot of GEs since they do not transfer over.

yeah there ya go, my response just wasnt inclusive enough. you can go to whatever college you want, but there are consequences to some vs. others

ok but here is my question: I am about to start Mesa Community College, and I WANT to transfer to ERC in my junior year, because my major is French and I plan to go to Law School and work in Human Rights, so I want the ERC Human Rights minor program. And ERC’s GE requirements are perfect for me because they allow me to focus on my major and the things I need for Law School (critical thinking, logic, etc). But if I plan to carefully take ERC’s GE requirements at Mesa, I will not be taking the IGETC required courses (like algebra, calculus), and if for some reason I am not given my first choice of ERC when I apply to UCSD, I am SCREWED on the GE requirements for the other colleges. I am totally desperate to go to ERC because it is EXACTLY what I want to do, and I can’t do BOTH ERC’s GE and IGETC or I will be at Mesa for 3 years. So, my question is, if I carefully do ERC’s GE requirements at Mesa, with a high GPA and all other requirements met, what are my chances of being given my first choice of ERC when I apply to UCSD?

I’m no expert but I would imagine it would be pretty easy to get ERC because seriously no transfers want it hahaha! but I am in ERC and I love it. I actually do like MMW even though I complain nonstop about it :)

awesome that was what I was figuring haha. I know I’m gonna love it, it is just scary to think I will prepare for the GE’s for 2 years and then get put at Marshall or something!
