colleges like Georgetown

What are some colleges that are similar to Georgetown but are larger, less expensive, and less selective?

Boston College?
Equally expensive (actually 4k less), a bit more Catholic but larger and less selective.

Boston College is larger and somewhat less selective but, in many ways, comparable to Georgetown in everything except international studies. It is probably just as expensive though.

If you want significantly cheaper, you need to look at public universities in your state, which are probably not the same quality.

What do you mean by “similar to Georgetown”?

What attribute(s) of Gtown do you particularly like, that it is in a city, that it is in DC, that it is Jesuit, that it has excellent academics (any subject in particular?), that is has a competitive basketball team??? Narrow it down for us.

And the above posters are correct in noting that most private schools will be just as expensive as Gtwon unless you apply to some where your statistics are in the top 25% or so and you might qualify for merit aid.

American & GWU are the obvious less-selective options.

^ The University of Maryland (College Park) is another DC-area school that is bigger than Georgetown, AU, and GW. It also is much cheaper (even at OOS rates, if you’re comparing full sticker prices). Like those 3 schools, Maryland shows up in Foreign Policy magazine’s lists of top IR programs.

There’s no place like Georgetown :D

tk21769–
similar in programs offered. I’m interested in IR, but my GPA (3.75) and SAT scores (1970) are nowhere near good enough to apply to Georgetown.

what else are you interested in? you’re not attending a school for all its programs. Is there anything besides IR? if you’re going IR, do you really want a program larger than Georgetown’s?

Besides IR, I’ve thought about a minor in French or maybe music. Possibly going into pre law? And by larger than Georgetown, I mean more of the size of the entire student body rather than the program size.

“less expensive”

What is your budget? How much will your family pay? Many privates cost the same. And, many OOS publics are expensive.

GW and American are the two obvious choices in DC. You can also consider Hopkins (Baltimore), NYU and Fordham (NYC), and Tufts (near Boston). But they won’t be cheaper unless you qualify for merit aid. For a less expensive option look at your in-state public school.

so you’re kind of all over the map in terms of interests, so you need a school that has IR and French and/or music, that is not as selective or expensive as Georgetown, and that could be larger.

of these criteria, the most important to your search, the criteria that will have the most impact on where you go next, is “less expensive than Georgetown.” So I’m in agreement that you need to run some net price calculators to find out what you can afford in general. If, for example, you cannot afford a school ANYTHING like Georgetown but can afford something more expensive than your state school, then you look for schools in that group and the state school. If, on the other hand, you can only afford your state school and have no merit opportunities then you go to the state school and if they don’t have IR you major in something close to IR and go from there.

Hundreds of other colleges offer most of the same programs Georgetown does.
Some of the top 100 do not have undergraduate business programs; many don’t have nursing programs; many offer other pre-professional programs (architecture, engineering, etc.) that Georgetown does not. Almost all of them offer a similar set of arts & science majors.

If you want to identify schools with strong programs in International Relations, check out Foreign Policy magazine’s “Inside the Ivory Tower” rankings.

The (relatively) less selective schools that show up anywhere in their rankings would include Ohio State, UCSD, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Maryland. These are all large, public research universities with lower sticker prices (even at OOS rates) than Georgetown. If you want a private school that is less selective than Georgetown, consider Syracuse. It has about 2x as many undergraduates as Georgetown. The Syracuse sticker price is a little lower than Georgetown’s. Syracuse has some merit scholarships (which Georgetown apparently does not). If you want a private school regardless of size, check out the University of Denver (which seems to offer bigger average merit awards, to a higher percentage of students, than Syracuse).

My Test scores and GPA are exactly like urs, but I still applied to Rice. You should at least give it a try!

Boston College is the easiest comparative school. While less selective, it is still pretty hard to get into.

You could also look into Michigan, UNC, Lehigh, Miami, Tufts, Northeastern, George Washington, and Syracuse.
