I live in the Northeast and have ok grades and scores (3.1 GPA, 29 ACT) from a top 10 HS in my state. It seems everyone wants to go to the schools around here, making it tough to get in anywhere. I prefer to go somewhere where I can go skiing on the weekends but am willing to give that up for the right place. I'm undecided but leaning towards something in business. Paying for college will be a struggle and I want to get my money's worth at a good school. I prefer a medium sized school (more than 3k but under 20k). I have heard from others that some state and fewer private schools are looking for OOS students and I may have a better chance looking further afield. Has anyone heard similar and/or what schools are looking?

"and I want to get my money’s worth at a good school. "

?

How much do you have to spend each year? What will your parents spend each year?

Public universities are looking for OOS students who will pay full fees.
Private colleges about 400+ miles from home want “geographical diversity” so that may help with admissions.
Look at private schools in the Midwest, South, Pacific Northwest… but be aware that your stats should be in the top 25% to maximize financial aid.
Suggestions to look into: Gustavus Adolphus, Carroll College of Montana, Willamette, Hendrix, Flagler, Eckerd, Guilford, Gonzaga., University of Puget Sound, West Chester University, ST Louis University, Southwestern University, UNC Asheville. (Those universities may not meet all your criteria).
Focusing on your “skiing” criterion: St Michael’s, Appalachian State, SUNY Plattsburgh, Ithaca, University of Denver, Fort Lewis, Westminster (Utah).
Finally, when you say “paying will be a struggle”, how much are you parents able or willing to pay? If you haven’t yet, run the Net Price Calculator for your state flagship, a LAC, and a Medium-sized university, then discuss the different costs with them.

Thanks all, especially MYO. A few of the ones you mentioned I had already been looking into. My folks are currently determining what is realistic to pay not just for me but also my two younger siblings (I’m the first). They are hoping for about $18k-20k/year and the rest will have to be loans or whatever aid etc. I can get. I don’t want to graduate with a ton of debt so I’m looking for a good school value. Besides the competitiveness of many NE schools they are crazy expensive especially when you also have all the extra fees, books on top of tuition. I kind of want to go far away so looking well outside this area is ok with me.

Any one else hear of schools that want OOS kids? TIA
