I know colleges are currently inundated with mail and that it takes a while to process everything, but I am feeling disconcerted. Three different schools need things my son or his high school already sent. Will colleges email him if the stuff doesn't show up after they've opened everything? Is there a standard procedure?

Don't worry so much- most schools don't start showing all the stuff till beginning february. And yes if they don't get something they'll definitely mail him.
I got a mail from UIUC about 2-3 pages that they wanted When they were missing those pages in the documents check.
also if they don't get something you have mailed them- they believe you and give you some leniency towards resending them.

Thanks for the perspective. It is so easy to get caught up in the frenzy, what with all the talk of it being the most crowded year ever. I guess I'll follow my wise son's advice and "chillax."

i sent my stuff in nov 2007; my colleges haven't received a single thing. argh! should i be worried.

It's always a good idea to call the schools about 2 weeks after you sent something to ask them if they got your materials. This way you can keep on top of who has what and not rely on the college admissions staff, who are totally inundated with material, to take the time to notify you that they don't have something.

cuRRent, have you talked to the school, either over the phone or via email, and made sure that they really don't have anything? If so, yes, you should be worried, because if they don't have anything, you can't be even considered for acceptance. Talk to the colleges and figure out what happened and what you should do.

which colleges did you apply to current?

you can just send a small mail asking the colleges instead of calling. and you shouldn't call or mail colleges like cornell as they specify that they will start showing the details in mid february and will not be attending to calls or mails regarding application material till then.

i sent a mail to a college and got a very nice response from the admissions officer who said that they are a bit delayed in the process but as i had asked her - she had checked my stuff and reported that everything had been recieved. she also had put my stuff through so i get the pin id to check earlier than others. So sometimes mailing helps but i guess if you sent your stuff through registered mail you shouldn't really worry at all.

yale, dartmouth, brown and oberlin

so far, only dartmouth has EVERYTHING.

my friend hand delivered her entire application in a manila envelope to the office of admissions. Everything was in that envelope. Now they are claiming to be missing some things and having others, even though they were all in the same darn envelope

Colleges always lose things in the process.

Send EVERYTHING at least twice. Send the second one after 2 weeks.

I had no problem with my EA schools, but the RD ones are taking a long time to process info. I am mostly worried about common app schools. I just don't trust the common app this year - I had a lot of problems with it. I e-mailed one school because they were showing that they hadn't received my common app and they responded that there was a "technical difficulty" but that they fixed it and my status would be updated soon. I also haven't heard anything at all from Yale, no confirmation e-mail or letter.

I've gotten notices from a few of my schools indicating they've received my application but are missing such-and such...

I panicked when I received the first one, but found out that it took only a few days until they updated my file. What I've been doing since then is waiting a week after receiving the notice and then I call them to check. So far this has worked out for me, and everything has been received.
