Are there any top colleges out there that do not require essays?

I want my son to apply to as many good colleges as possible (because their acceptance rates are so low), but I realize that writing the essays in the supplemental applications takes quite a lot of work.

Wash U, Dartmouth – to name two. Dartmouth requires a friend to write a peer evaluation, but no essay of the candidate.

Application essays, Common and supplemental, are key elements in the Admissions evaluation process and can often make the difference in admissions or denial. If your son is concerned abour application essays, how will he react to and handle academic essay assignments that are typically much longer and require significant preparation?

It depends on how many other applications he’s doing, doesn’t it? For example, if he’s already doing a dozen or so apps, why not throw one for Wash U, which will take almost no additional time. Given that it’s a numbers game, there’s little to lose other than the application fees.

(Though I don’t KNOW this – I would bet that the two schools I mentioned took into consideration the impact on the number of applications they would receive when they decided not to ask for supplemental essays.)
