but heres the thing...mtv is not named white america or any other nonsense and BET caters MAINLY to blacks and they dont really want whites to view it whereas mtv is a mixture of cultures white, black, mexican and so on

WoW is corerect. BET is For Blacks. What If I was to make the WET channel, White Enetertainment Television. I would have all sorts of groups, such as al sharpton and Jesse jackson saying it would be racism.

You were mentioning Direct Effect, It comes on for 3 hours a week,
http://www.mtv.com/onair/dyn/dfx/series.jhtml

Remeber MTV has a Whole Day for Blacks Its called.

Sucker free Sunday
http://www.mtv2.com/#sucker_free_sunday/

The Main posters topic refers to why is it ok for Things to be Segragated for whites today, but if whites try to segragate blacks. Its a Hell storm.

OMG DIVERSITY & multiculturalism.

I hate how ever college pushes that **** on people.

From what I've seen, MTV = BET2

[quote]

BET is not strictly for blacks. Tom Cruise, and Justin Timberlake along with NSYNC have been on BET several times. Its not like they say "only black people can watch this station". Its just that the main music that is on the station is hip hop and r & b. Thats one of the main focuses of BET, just like MTV plays rock and other types of music that maybe people who watch BET aren't the biggest fans of and vice versa.

The Name of the Station is Black Entertainment Tele. Seems directed at blacks. Thogh i cant rememeber seeing a Rock Video on their, or anybody rock artists invited to the BET awards.

There's nothing wrong with being directed at one demographic or another. Do you think NBC's primetime lineup of Friends, Will & Grace, etc. were targeted at blacks? I don't THINK so. Every station does it. Why give BET such a hard time, and not other channels?

because of the Name. NBC's name is not directed towrds whites. I know many blacks who watch NBC and its shows.

BET is Named Black entertainment television. What does Black mean?

Im just asking why is this ok, while if their was a WET channel, their would be hell to pay.

so would you be satisfied (honestly) if BET changed it's name to something like Urban Cable Network or something like that?

I think that would be more approriate. geared towrds, Blacks, Hispanics and all other people who live an urban Lifestyle.

LOL Hispanic TV is mostly all white. It's geared toward like the white people of Mexico it looks like whereas USA has programs geared toward anyone whos not white like AZN TV, BET and other stuff. The US is one big leftist police state.

Why are you trying to say that only Black colleges are so called "racist." As others said, there are All Women and all men's colleges. But, there are also, colleges for Native Americans. Do you call reservation colleges which cater to a population that have suffered for hundreds of years and remain to be neglected and forgotten "racist?" They have an even worse past than African-Americans who have suffered from overt racism until maybe a decade or twenty years after the Civil Rights Period.

All black colleges will not reject you simply because your non-white. Trust me. Sometimes, they may even accept you more readily because you add diversity to the campus (especially if your a good student compared to the rest of the student body). And, there are "black colleges" which the majority of students are white.

I think that the problem lies that many non-blacks feel uncomfortable in that setting and have these pre-concieved notions that they'll automatically be rejected from the community. I don't blame anyone for thinking that because it's hard to be in the minority, especially in a social setting where you're not being as catered to as the target population. This goes for any school, including jock schools, party schools, all-women schools, academic power houses, etc.

"heir are Colleges who will only admit Blacks. if a Asian or Hispanic or a white were to apply they would be automatically turned down."

What a ridiculous statement. Regardless of race, if a person applies to a historically black college, they will get in -- if they qualify for admission. They even may get merit aid if they have strong stats.

BTW, historically black colleges are historically black because they served students whom the other colleges would not take -- because the students were black, regardless of the students' qualifications. Many mainstream colleges only started accepting black students in the last century. This includes Princeton, which took its first black student in 1945. Davidson took its first black students in the 1960s.

As for BET being black entertainment TV, just take a look at the major network TV stations: The shows are populated predominantly by whites even though at least 25% of the country is not white.

Not only that, but when they do try to target a show on network TV toward blacks or other minorities it is so incredibly lame as to be considered stupid. (one on one, the parkers, girlfriends, etc) Totally unwatchable!

"Not only that, but when they do try to target a show on network TV toward blacks or other minorities it is so incredibly lame as to be considered stupid. (one on one, the parkers, girlfriends, etc) Totally unwatchable!"

so just because BET sucks its ok for them to have it? lol that makes no sense

You totally misread my post. I said network TV that is targeted toward minorities is totally unwatchable.

That's true, Joev. These shows perpetuate stereotypes. They don't try to show the characters in a deeper light.

Yeah I don't like em much either. And I believe BET has it's name because when it was starting up we didnt have as big a voice as we do now in the entertainment biz. And anyways I know plenty of my white friends whom watch BET.

My roommate watches BET all the time, and it drives me crazy. He only usually does it when I am not around, so I will give him props for that.

They don't need a WET. That's why we have ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. Wow, they get a whole channel...geez, the nerve of them. And Historically Black Colleges and Universities do allow students other than black to attend. As the point has been made many a time already, with this reasoning, are women's colleges sexist?

lol at joev

and well said duke

It is possible that women colleges are sexist...I mean in this day and age where they are mostly equal with men it seems kinda silly to have a college or something that only aims for one type of individual (women).

"They don't need a WET. That's why we have ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX"

And no none of you seem to be understanding this!!! It is called Black entertainment....anyone can watch ABC, NBC, etc. but BET is basically saying this is for Blacks and no one else...now granted anyone can watch BET but that doesnt mean that the owners of BET like it they really cant stop it from happening.
