Colleges offering scholarships to National Hispanic Scholars

Well, my son called me from school and told me he got the NHMS…but his school of choice - Univ. of North Texas does not have a scholarship program for these students. He has his heart set on UNT because of the Music program, but I have my heart set on taking advantage of whatever monies he can get for college that doesn’t come out of my already stretched-to-the-limit budget.

Does any know if any of the schools mentioned here which offer scholarships to NHM’s have a good music program?

i emailed rochester financial and they said it was worth $17k per year. we haven’t rcvd an official letter so i emailed the college board and they confirmed our scholar status.

^That’s interesting to hear! I remember looking at their website and being very frustrated with them only saying that all merit scholarships were worth between 2k and full tuition.

Congrats to everyone!

Has anyone received the award letter from CB? The school knows and we are getting al this mails from colleges but have not received the official letter

On the University of Arizona website it states that the scholarship is “offered to the National Scholars who qualify by taking the Preliminary SATs (PSATs) in high school.” Does this include National Hispanic Scholars?

^^Yes. D got a letter from Arizona offering her the $30K/ year scholarship you mention above.

It was as of last year. My son received a letter last year around this time offering him full-tuition for 4 yrs at about $35K a year. He was accepted in the early round but he also go in to UPenn in the early round and it was his 1st choice and binding so he’s there now. However, Fordham was a little slow processing the thanks-but-no-thanks paperwork and we kept getting calls from financial aid. Had he gone there we weren’t going to be paying much…less than $5K a yr.

I’ve been doing some online research and here are some schools offering current scholarships to NH Scholars:
Northeastern University
Florida GulfCoast University
Florida International University
Oklahoma City University
University of Evansville
University of Vermont
South Carolina State University
Tulsa University
Union University
Oklahoma State University
Richmond University
University of New Mexico
University of Central Florida
University of Texas Dallas

Thanks LVM, keep them coming people!

Based on my experience a couple of years ago…I urge everyone to call the schools’ scholarship offices to ask directly about National Hispanic scholarship opportunities. Many times they are not shown on the website. Also, do not assume that the school is aware that your child is a National Hispanic Scholar–even if it was written on his/her application. Call, call, call!!!

Thank you to everyone that contributed to the vast amount of valuable information on this thread!
I am having trouble getting a request for verification sent to my child’s school. I have contacted NHRP via their stated email address, but they are slow to respond. At one point they asked for my child’s GC’s name which we provided, but the school still has not received anything. I am not understanding the deadlines regarding this recognition. It concerns me becasue somewhere I saw the deadline to turn-in verification is mid-June. Do I need to be concerned? Will my child miss the opportunity to be recognized due to this glitch? If anyone has had a similar problem, I would appreciate your input. The college board FAQ list does not address this issue.
Thanks!

Welcome Wendy!

Please see my post #495 on this thread:

If your school is still in session, I recommend having your GC call NHRP. If you are on summer break, don’t worry, we have had many student receive the award even though the paperwork was done in the fall.

Hi all, since I have seen a lot of schools dropping or reducing their scholarships to National Hispanic Scholars I decided to do a search and see what is still outhere. Goods news is that there is still plenty of scholarship opportunities. Some still come from so called A schools and a great number come from regional A/B+ schools. For a kid looking not only for an undergraduate degree these are of tremendous value.

I decide to place the shortcut of each paged I found. If you don’t see it at first try to navigagte thru the page. IF at first doesn’t look as a full tuition rememeber thatn in many places the scholarships are stackable and should get you to the full tuition goal or even more. Good luck to the upcoming 2013 NHS class!!!

Thanks, lapagan! Ds is really interested in GW, and I’d heard that it wasn’t great with the money. Maybe he can get that $15k! Though he’d still need a lot more …

Just joined CC and am a little overwhelmed! My son was just named an NHRP scholar so I started doing some research and found CC. Thank you so much to all of you who have been doing this research and posting for the rest of us to benefit. We are getting a late start to the scholarship search (class of 13) because we thought our options were going to be limited financially. We made a default decision to go the local state school. Hopefully the NHRP scholar designation will help open up the opportunities.

Congratulations!!!

If your son graduates in May 2013, you have plenty of time. I’ll try to apply to as many your son is interested by October 1st. Some schools have priority date Sept 15th.

You might be a little late in visiting schools but he stills have the Fall, Christmas, and Spring breaks to visit themm and decide. Usually do don’t have to commit until April 15th unless your are early decision.

Happy hunting for the right fit!

As requested by the wonderful Entomom, here are the admission and $ offers for my 2012 NHRP son and his rough stats. We did not qualify for financial aid, BTW.

3.8 UW, 4.2 W, AP Scholar, 2200+ SAT, three Subject test SATs 700+ (incl. 800 in math), fairly weak ECs, National Merit Commended, top 10% at strong public HS in California.

Willamette (waived admission fee, I assume for NHRP) $17,000
Fordham (waived fee) full tuition and guaranteed housing (for us to pay)
Univ. of New Mexico–did not apply but he was solicited for Amigo scholarship, which I think was full tuition
University of Arizona–did not apply but solicited to apply for full tuition scholarship
U of Chicago (paid for application) $10,000 merit scholarship
UC Davis (paid for app) Regents Scholarship and Honors Program, 1/2 tuition scholarship
UCSB, UCSD Honors Program (priority registration and lots of other perks but no $)

One thing I would DEFINITELY recommend for seniors is to get a big black garbage bag and open and put all letters from colleges into the bag, do not throw anything away until you have made a final decision. Also, don’t just toss letters into the bag, actually open them–if they have a “free” app why not apply, all you have to lose is time! That offer from Fordham was awfully tempting and it was not even on our radar, while Willamette was a place he might definitely have ended up had his favorite school not come through! They have a very fast turnaround, it was his first acceptance and when he got it, he said "well, at least I know I am going to college SOMEWHERE next year!

WordWorld- Thank you for posting that information. I agree with your comment about saving the mail. We got those inexpensive plastic crates and put hanging folder in them and just divided it “colleges a-g; h-m and n-z.” Schools that DD is interested in get put into the main application crate with a file for each school. Always read the mail because it may trigger something of interest.

Also what was your son’s PSAT score? Congrats on Chicago and UC Regents. Those are hard scholarships to get.

I agree-Willamette is a great school and their Latino recruiter really goes out of his way to try and do the most for Hispanic applicants.

I just wanted to clarify something from an earlier post.

The University of New Mexico Amigo scholarship is just a out of state tuition and fee waiver - it is not full tuition - which makes their tuition cost $6351 per year. It also offers a $200 stipend each year. (I am copying this from the letter my D received today).

She also received a University of Nebraska Lincoln letter stating their scholarship is full tuition plus $2000 toward room, board and fees.

We also got the UNM and the Nebraska-Lincoln letters today.
