Do colleges re-calculate GPA? If so how…
Or do they specify on applications whether to include your weighted or unweighted GPA?
If this practice varies between schools, does anyone know how the Ivies treat this issue?

Yes, colleges re-calculate GPA because many highschools have different standards for calculating GPA. Although, I'm not sure if all colleges do. Some high schools give extra .5 for taking honors/AP classes, whereas some others give 1 or even 2. The highest GPA you can get at my highschool (unweighted) is 4.5, but it seems like some schools even go up to 5 or 6. I'm not exactly sure how they do it.
I assume they look at your letter grades/percentage and use their own GPA standard to re-calculate. (at least that's what I heard about UPenn)
