Colleges Rechecking Their Scholarship Math

Colleges Rechecking Their Scholarship Math, Where 1 + 1 Can Equal 1 1/2 - New York Times

How does your college currently treat outside
scholarships?

dude this article is about ten year old o_o

Yes it is, but I am bringing it up for discussion. Schools still use the outside scholarships, but some schools are being a bit more generous these days. How does the school you attend or will be attending treat outside scholarships now?

the university of chicago will take away my a portion of grant money and replace it with scholarships. but im not sure if i am going there. i think if i called and spoke to the director of f.a. (alicia reyes) and explained my situation she would probably be willing to help out. or put my scholarship money somewhere else... i would hope.

The schools my D applied to were all different. Some took half of the outside scholarship, some let the student keep a certain dollar amount and then took half of the balance, some let the student reduce loans by the amount of the scholarship. You have to read each schools policy...

My daughter's school reduces loans then work study then grants.

When we have our honors convocation mid-May (which is when we find out the school scholarships, etc) what do we do about reporting those amounts? From past experience, sometimes they don't actually get the money until they have completed a semester, or a year.I want it to go towards the cash we are to contribute! The award letter to the school D is leaning towards had a spot at the bottom of the FA award letter (the one you send back signed) for outside scholarships. I already know of one she has that has to be sent directly to the school, or else I think we can submit receipts and have the money sent to us.

With my older D, they never told us to report outside scholarships, and only one check that she got had to be made out to the school. I just sent the money in with my payment, including the check made out to the school. They never said anything.

You are supposed to report the amount of any outside scholarships if you are getting any institutional or federal aid. If the scholarship is awarded after you send in the signed award letter, you let them know at that time. D received one in June, so we just emailed the f/a office to let them know.

Don't "hide" the awards!!
