Colleges Similar to University of Scranton

I have heard a lot of positive information regarding the University of Scranton. We plan on attending their open house.

I am looking for suggestions for schools similar to Scranton. I was told to look at Loyola of MD, Quinnipiac and Stonehill. We recently went to the open house at Siena and my son did not care for the school. I was not very impressed with the facilities and or dorms. It seems to be a very sports oriented school with students either playing small D-1 sports or club teams. Siena is located in a nice area but not walking distance to town.

My son is interested in schools that offer more clubs/activities other than sports. Some of the activities that interest him are skiing, hiking along with academic clubs. He would also like a school which is a college town even if small. He likes the small college atmosphere. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

UVM maybe?

SUNY New Paltz may be a good option. Perhaps Marist as well.

St. Anselm College?

Loyola Maryland has a beautiful, traditional campus in an urban setting. It is in Baltimore city. No greek life or football. But lacrosse is big. Really big. And no skiing nearby. Might be the occasional day trip up to Pennsylvania though.

Other Jesuit schools to consider would be Canisius, Lemoyne, and Fairfield. Academics, mission, activities, and selectivity will be similar to Scranton and Loyola but with more access to snow activities. If the snow activities are optional, St. Joseph’s in Philly would be worth checking out.

And for more selective Jesuit options, Holy Cross and Boston College.

Are you looking for PT? If so, Arcadia?

There’s no town near Stonehill or Quinnipiac. Both sporty, but Bucknell and Lafayette have towns close by. Clarkson does as well I believe, but we didn’t venture there before leaving. They have a huge outdoors club (CUOC) that does outdoors type adventures. They said there are 300 members.

Not sure what level of selectivity you’re looking for, but a few that come to mind that are small and intown are Wesleyan, Union, Bowdoin, Dickinson. UNH is smallish for a state uni and is in the middle of a very cute college town. Bowdoin and UNH are big outdoorsy schools.

St Michaels VT.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. We toured UNH and have not ruled it out… I will take a look at Arcadia and also plan on checking out Susquehanna.

This might help?

A lot of kids around here like Seton Hill and St Francis University in PA. Gannon and Duquesne are also popular.

Do check out Susquehanna, and maybe Messiah.

I don’t know U of Scranton but I thought of College of Wooster when you mentioned your child’s preferences. Nice campus, in a town, Greek life not dominant, and offers merit scholarships of up to 30K (or did as of a couple of years ago).

I also recommend St. Michael’s College - just outside Burlington, Vermont. They have an adventure sports center that offering hiking, rock climbing kayaking, etc. https://www.smcvt.edu/experience/adventure-sports-center.aspx They are close to skiing and offer a few deals with resorts and free transportation to Sugarbush on weekends https://www.smcvt.edu/athletics/ski-and-ride-pass.aspx

When looking at schools, I too was interested in a style similar to University of Scranton. That’s when I came across Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY! I’m currently a senior here and looked at Quinnipiac, University of Scranton, and Loyola of MD during my application process but found that Marist had the perfect balance of academics, clubs/activities, and the small college atmosphere I was seeking. I would highly recommend it!

My DD is also a senior at Marist and loves it. It’s a very good size for those who what “not too big, but not too small either.” The campus is gorgeous.

Love Marist

To be honest, Arcadia is a small school but has no college town at all. I’m a current student and I can tell you that the clubs don’t do much and it’s essentially a ghost town. Everyone knows at least a couple of people seriously considering transferring after this semester.

My daughter has been really attracted to the recreation available at East Stroudsburg University, also in the Poconos. It has a student-run recreation area with hiking, etc.

UVM IS A HUGE PARTY SCHOOL QUINNIPIAC IS A GORGEOUS CAMPUS ALTHOUGH NOT CLOSE TO A SMALL CITY LOTS OF RESTAURANTS AND SHOPPING MALLS WITHIN MINUTES.MY STEPDAUGHTER ATTENDS THEY ARE KNOWN FOR NUTRITION,/NURSING PROGRAMS.
