I know there's a website out there that lists colleges with openings. Can anyone help? I saw a Mom whose daughter is a friend of my son's and it sounds as if they just didn't understand the whole timing issue. She's got one acceptance but it might now be financially do-able. I'd love to be able to help her out. Thanks in advance.

The University of Oklahoma was still sending out recruiting letters to arrive this week. The U of Nebraska was recruiting pretty recently too.

*She’s got one acceptance but it might now be financially do-able. *

Do you mean that it might not be financially do-able? If so, will other colleges be affordable? The reason I’m asking is because some OOS publics are accepting applications, but their costs will be about $30k+. For instance, Alabama is accepting apps, but their OOS COA is about $31k. The other mentioned OOS publics will be about the same or higher.

How much can they afford? Are they also in PA? If so, won’t a PA state school be affordable?

If money is an issue, it may be best that the D start at a local community college or take a year off and do a gap year. Another option would be to see if any in-state 4-year colleges still are taking applications, though if she needs financial aid, probably all of their financial aid has been allocated by now.

Since $ is an issue, it may be difficult to go to OOS public schools or to private schools that are still accepting applications.

Around May 1, NACAC usually lists schools that still have openings.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, maybe a gap year or a late start would work but I’m under the impression that she wants to go somewhere this fall. I’ll pass this info on.

Thanks Denise - that’s the link I was looking for, I think!

Petersons also has a list of late and rolling date schools: [Late & Rolling Deadline Schools](Late Deadline Schools: Finding one and getting in with a great college essay)

^^ re above list,

U Chicago? Really?

Yes, I did a double take on U of Chicago as well. I thought I read somewhere they had a 42% increase in apps this year since moving to the Common App.

Well, my S got an app the other day from Ohio Wesleyan U in Delaware, OH but it claimed this was for HIM an extended app period to end of March, due to economic conditions in CA … Or did they say economic conditions at Ohio Wesleyan, LOL!

If the student is a PA resident, won’t it be more financially reasonable for him to apply to a PA public?

If Penn State University Park is still taking applications, that application should go in right away.

The one thing about the student in question is that her family is moving to NC in June. I don’t know how that would work for residency. This student would not be a fit for PSU.

I think the residency is based on the previous year, and once the child starts school the residency is “set” - regardless of whether the parents move.

Would the student be ok at one of the other PSU’s.

How much can the family afford to spend each year?

I don’t really know the family or the girl well enough to ask any personal money questions. I would just like to be able to offer her some suggestions so she’s not settling for a college just because it’s the only one that they can afford even though it might not be right for her. I’m not really sure about the other PSU’s, but I’m sure they are on her radar screen. A couple of the friends in their circle attend either Kutztown, Bloomsburg or one of the PSU satellite campuses.

I don’t really know the family or the girl well enough to ask any personal money questions. I would just like to be able to offer her some suggestions **so she’s not settling for a college just because it’s the only one that they can afford **even though it might not be right for her.

Well, then, what is the school that she might be settling for and how much does it cost? You don’t need to ask what they can afford if you know that they can afford School X which they are now considering. :)

Actually, I do know one college where she’s been accepted and another where the mother thinks she can still apply but I’d rather not post them here. The former is a private LAC that costs $40,000 inclusive.

Although it does not show up on a Common App search, I know that [Earlham College has extended its application deadline to April 1](http://www.earlham.edu/admissions/content/applying/index.html).

Earlham is one of the [Colleges That Change Lives](Earlham College – Colleges That Change Lives).

Northern Arizona Univ- out of state tuition is reasonable. With decent grades and scores they also award some OOS scholarships.

OK… :)

If the family can afford a private for $40k (inclusive) then it’s reasonable to think that they can afford many OOS publics that are still accepting apps. :)

What is the student’s likely major or career goal?
