No, the family cannot afford the full freight. They are just now filling out the FAFSA!

^^^

Ok…then OOS publics won’t likely work since they don’t usually help OOS students with need to cover OOS costs.

So, the only other choices are schools that still are accepting apps, but might give some aid or merit. Does anyone know which schools might do this at this late a date?

Any one of these schools with very generous financial aid for international students?

I’d like to try my luck and see if I can get better FA packages.

(aside: any colleges at all ever offers full-ride for internationals? the deadline could be over already, but it would be good to know)

thanks

Some top elites/ivies will give full financial aid to internationals who can demonstrate financial need (by showing documentation).

I don’t know if any of the above give generous FA packages to int’ls, but some might give scholarships for strong stats.

Where did you apply, what are your stats, and what kind of FA packages did you receive so far?

Here some good schools who are still accepting apps,
Temple, which extended their deadline to April 1st.
Univ of Pittsburgh, which has rolling admissions
Univ of Hartsford
Univ of Bridgeport which has a April 15 deadline

The problem won’t be getting into a 4-year college for this fall. There are plenty of colleges still accepting applications. The problem will be getting money to attend the college since most colleges financial aid deadlines have passed, and with very rare exception the colleges still accepting applications don’t promise to meet financial need.

Consequently, it may be best to take a gap year and reapply or to start by commuting to a local 2-year college.

^^ that’s a good point. I agree that many schools have already distributed their scholarship or aid funds to students who have been admitted already.

mom2collegekids: I received some partial to almost full-tuition scholarships to reputable but little-known LACs in the midwest (my favourite place!). Yup, that’s nearly the maximum these colleges have stated that they could give. When I applied for more selective schools, I dared not ask for FA as that would reduce my shots when the school is already a reach for everyone!

I was just on Earlham College’s website, and they offer 2 full-ride scholarships a year to internationals! Sweet! All you need is to pay your own airfair. But I bet the 2 winners for this year have been chosen. So maybe next year’s applicants an keep Earlham in mind.

Hollins University accepts applications until August 1, 2010.

I don’t know if anyone suggested this, but why not take a gap year and apply instate to the schools in NC. They are incredibly affordable. And, they are all pretty darn good for the money. my .02

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m passing this on to my son who will give to his friend. I don’t really know the family all that well to help much more. The mom and I had a fairly short conversation and it wasn’t until after we talked that I remembered that it was around this time of year that a thread usually pops ups about late acceptance colleges. It sounded like a very likely scenario would be that they would pay OOS tuition at a NC state school for a year and then would be able to get in-state. At least that was what the Mom said. And NC has some wonderful state U’s so that would be a fine outcome.

Kathiep, Most deadlines for fall admission to the UNC system schools have passed.

UNC-Charlotte has a 3/30 deadline for Fall Admission

Western Carolina University site said “3/1 and is open” which sounds like they may still be taking apps.

East Carolina University deadline was 3/15 but website said still processing apps. Don’t know if that means new apps. being accepted or still processing the ones that came in by 3/15

UNC Asheville says late apps will be considered on a space available basis.

All others’ UNC-CH, UNC-W,UNC-G, ASU,NCSU deadlines for apps have passed.

She could move here to NC with her family and go to a CC and transfer to a state u. or it’s possible that she could be a Spring admit. I know a couple of kids who got accepted for Spring. They went to a CC for Fall sem. and then to the univ. in Jan.

My impression from the Mom is that she was accepted at a NC state U but was not thrilled with the idea. I could be wrong.

kathiep, do you mean she was accepted to NCSU or another school on the system?
Do you know which one?

She mentioned the name, but I’d rather not post it. Between my screen name and information I’ve already revealed I don’t want this to come back to me IRL.
