Does anyone know of any list of colleges that have a strong string music program that also rates pretty highly with pre-med. I have a 15yo Sophmore that is an extremely strong violinist but would like to look into pre-med. Not strong academically yet but we are working on it. I think it might make sense for her to pursue the music as a major and if she has enough exposure, she might pursue the pre-med.

If she wants to be pre-med, she needs to be strong academically!
That being said, I believe that good music schools that also have academic programs are Rochester (connected with Eastman), Oberlin, Indiana, and Michigan. She might need to double major or take five years to really complete a music major at these schools and still fulfill premed requirements, but she could also just take a lot of music, including instrumental lessons, and major in something else.

I’d second University of Rochester as well.

lugan2, please spend some time in CC’s music major forum [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums) and start here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/258796-so-you-want-music-major-one-familys-experience.html if you are looking at pursuing music at an advanced level. You will get excellent advice on the search and selection forum when it comes to typical “academic” programs, but the nuances and requirements of selecting a school for a performance discipline are typically beyond the scope of knowledge of even the most well versed in typical academic admissions.

Both academic stats and audition results will be considered. Each institution weighs EACH of these differently. You will need to know what schools (and often specific private instructors) support a dual pursuit, the time requirements of a BM program, how and if they will conflict with the rigorous coursework of pre-med path with heavy lab coursework.

Without knowing more about academics performance and musical training throwing out institutional names is a shotgun approach. If performance is the intended career path, the focus should be on primary instructor options, level of peer quality, performance, exposure and networking opportunities.

There are a number of programs mentioned within the links, but places like Oberlin, Northwestern, Rochester/Eastman, Hopkins/Peabody, Rice, Bard (which requires a five year dual major for performance admits) require top flight stats as well as extremely competitive audition pools. There are good academic schools with solid music programs, and great music choices with good to great academics beyond those I mentioned.

There are also plenty of dual degree/double major threads within the music forum. A science based BS/BA coupled with a BM (or even a less intense BA) is one of the toughest time and credit wise. Expect five years, maybe more.

I’d be happy to pull up thread links if you can’t find them by searching.
