I am also a non-drinker. There is a lot of drinking at Rice, but the thing is, people are totally okay and still are accepting if you don’t drink. A substantial number of Rice students also don’t drink (25% or so), and so you can still have fun without drinking. There is also a lot of things to do on campus and in Houston that don’t involve drinking.

Unfortunately, except BYU, the military academies, and many of the smaller liberal arts schools, drinking is going to be prevalent almost at every school.

^ From what we have seen, drinking AND drugs are just as prevalent (or more so) at small LAC’s as they are at other colleges or universities. In fact, these activities are prevalent at many high schools. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

The LAC choir on cc has tried to convince us that binge drinking only takes place at certain campuses. Hogwash. It may help certain individuals feel better about sending their kids to certain schools, but it may not be completely accurate.

Kids will decide whether or not they wish to partake in certain activities no matter where they go to college. Period. As parents, we can only hope that we provided them with the tools and upbringing to make good decisions.

Hey Slik Nik!

I was hoping you could give me more of a personal perspective on the non-drinking scene at Rice. As a non-drinker, what do you do on Friday and Saturday nights on a regular basis?
