<p>One heuristic of prestige that everyone seems to have overlooked is how often a college has been the subject of a New Yorker cartoon, surely a symbol of branding if ever there was one. Princeton tailgating parties seem to be a favorite object of fun as is this 1967 poke at Wesleyan which could be just as current today:</p>

<p>I might strike out on the New Yorker cartoon lampoons...the cartoon editor of the magazine is a Swarthmore grad.</p>
<p>I can't find a link to it, and it doesn't represent a particular college, but there was one where the setting was a cocktail party. Two imposing looking guys look suspiciously at a third man who is approaching them. One of the 2 guys says to the 3rd guy, "If you're not a Ph.D., scram."</p>

Maybe not entirely true. The original</a> Dilbert strip actually referenced the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Someone at USMA apparently decided to "improve" it.</p>
