Colleges That Match Me?

So for the past few months i've been searching for a college that fits me. Often times I usually find colleges with averages well above me, making me feel like i'm never going to get into a "good" college (a little dramatic I know but it means the world to me). I want to find a college that's good for me and won't be a reach, one that matches and suits me in terms of grades, test scores, ECs, etc. I feel like my best bet right now is community college :( Any suggestions?

By the way i'm looking for colleges in Minnesota, Nevada, or California

Currently a senior in highschool

My GPA is 3.6 unweighted, and 4.3 weighted

I got a really horrible score on my SATs (around 1500), but i'm RETAKING both SAT and ACT in October (plan on jumping up a couple hundred points for the SAT)

I go to a magnet school where I "major" in Nursing, (basically my sched. consisted of 8 classes instead of 6 to fit in those nursing classes every year

---those 2 extra classes were not weighted- rather they were counted as electives

-I'm in the top 14% of my class

ALL core classes were at least honors, I also took AP world history, AP English, and AP Biology

-My senior schedule is equally as rigorous as my other school years
--taking 2 science classes

I do have an art credit

-I worked a seasonal job last summer

ECs:
-HOSA(health occupation students of america) member senior and junior yr
-MRC(medical reserve corps) senior and jr year
-DECA sophomore year
-C.E.R.T. certified (volunteering)
-Key Club freshman and sophomore year

Idk if this helps but by the time i graduate I would have taken (and hopefully passed) the certification tests for both Pharmaceutical Technician and Certified Nursing Assistant

Thank you!!!

Hey there,

I can’t tell you which colleges specifically that you should apply to, because ultimately, it is up to your own criteria to decide where to go. Although you are looking for schools in specific states, I wouldn’t limit myself to a few states (because you never know!)

The best advice I can give is that you should do a LOT of research. Are you still looking to major in something related to the medical field? Do you want a small, medium, or large school? Public or private school? Costs? Urban, rural, or suburban setting? Social life? Extracurriculars? These (along with many more questions) are important to consider in narrowing down your college choices.

Also, make sure to visit campuses and ask a lot of questions. I think it’s really important to get a feel for the school before you decide to apply or commit. Try to sit in on a class, take a tour, talk to a current student, or even stay overnight.

I hope this helps!

Oh definitely forgot to add that, I want to major in biology and move on to med school.
-school size med-large
-public
-preferably cheaper than 20k a year, but if it’s a really good school i’m willing to take loans
-social life isn’t as important as other factors
-E.C.s are also not as important to me, but I would love to be in medical related clubs like HOSA

Thanks it really helps!

What is your home state? You will not find any schools OOS under $20K. You should look at your home state for the best deal. Also as a Freshman, you will only be allowed to take out $5500 in loans. The rest will be up to your parents unless you get need aid or merit aid. I live in California and both sons attend California schools. The Cal states will be under $20k if you commute. If you live on campus, $20K will cover tuition/room and board. For the UC’s, tuition is $13K and living on campus puts it at $28K+. You need to figure out your EFC and run some Net Price Calculators (NPC) on some schools to see what you and your family can afford.

I live in Nevada, where the only candidates would be UNLV or UNR  I was thinking about going to a school in state and then transferring but I just feel like I won’t be getting that great of an education and experience by going to UNLV. Also I can only dream of UC’s, but I am seriously considering Cal State San Bernardino although their stats are lower than UNLV. Before considering the price, i’ve just been looking at schools I can actually even get accepted to. Looks like i’ve got a lot of research to do, thanks again Gumbymom!

Since you are OOS for California, the price tag for a Cal State will be around $30K and $55K for UC’s. Cal State San Bernardino would be a waste of money. If you want to look at the Cal States, you should consider the higher ranking schools such as San Diego State, Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly SLO. For SDSU,CSULB and SLO (especially), need to get that SAT score up to 1800+ or more. SLO is the most competitive Cal State. OOS students get little or no financial aid from the UC’s and Cal States, so the price tag is high unless you go to one of the higher ranking Cal States.

Why would San Bernardino be a waste? Im definitely considering SLO as youve seen my post in the that forum. But if I got a higher SAT (which im most likely achieving) would I be a competitive candidate for SLO? Im just comparing the quality of education but my realistic colleges seem to be UNLV, UNR, or San Bernardino. The other UC’s and Cal States seem to be a reach for me sadly

Cal State San Bernardino is considered a lower tier Cal State and for the OOS costs, the business program is so so according to some friends.
The Cal States use an Eligibility index to rank all applicants for each major. You need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA first. See link and using only 10-11th grades and only AP classes for Honors extra points. For SLO, they use 9th grades also in their calculation. <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
Then take your UC/CSU GPA and plug it into the EI calculation:::
(UC/CSU GPA x 800) + (SAT Math + SAT CR). If you have an EI of 4000+, you have a decent chance at SDSU, CSULB and CSUF. SLO is a very different but if you can get close to the average GPA/SAT score for the school of business, you have a chance. <a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;

Alright with my current SAT score my El came out to be 3928 and for the extra points only SLO gives that puts me at 4128. I’ve created a list, please let me know which are reaches, matches, and safetys(considering the fact that my test scores will increase)

SLO
SDSU
UNLV
UNR
U of MN
UCI
CSUSB

Thanks!

SLO doesn’t add the bonus points directly to your EI since they do not use the EI for their acceptance. Here is the link of how they do the bonus points: http://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1014&context=statsp&sei-redir=1&referer=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fp%3Dcal%2Bpoly%2Bslo%2Bmca%26fr%3Dipad#search=“cal%20poly%20slo%20mca”</a></p>

SLO: Low Reach
SDSU/UCI: High Match
UNLV/CSUSB/U of MN: Match
UNR: Safety
