Colleges that offer merit based art scholarships

D rec’d a Presidential merit scholarship from Pratt for $14K/ year. No financial aid papers were filed with Pratt. She applied early action.

My D goes to MCAD, her 2nd choice was KCAI. She got merit from both. KC offered more but when compared with room and board costs, MCAD was only slightly higher. They have apartments there, not dorm rooms, and she loved that. The KC rep was in touch for awhile and even came to visit her HS, but after that, was unresponsive. It was a little odd. Meanwhile the MCAD rep was right there all the time. It was a tough choice, she too, wanted a smaller school, and in the end MCAD won out for the vibrant city atmosphere. That was a great choice for her. She has done a lot of different things, and her profs have encouraged her to think and work outside the box.

Hartford Art School @ University of Hartford offered my D a full tuition scholarship yesterday based on a portfolio competition. They offered 5 of these full scholarships!!

thanks for adding these schools everyone and congrats to your kids!

Are you looking for Art schools or liberal arts colleges. University of the Arts gives out Artist Grants." My son received one for their Acting program, but I’m sure they award them to visual artists as well.

Stickynik, my dd got into Ringling too, and I know that they give out very little merit money. I have been told it is because they put much of their funds back into the programs and capital campaign. I will get to see it soon, so I can let you know when we get back from accepted students day soon.

I’m going into my Senior year right now at KCAI. I transfered in as a Sophomore from Community College.

Little background: Completely financially independent college student above the age of 23.

19,000 (57,000) over three years for the Transfer Competitive Scholarship. They give out one each year to a transfer to each department and I believe its chosen by the scholarship board of the school and the head of your program’s department.

In addition to that I have:

5,550 FAFSA
2,000 Fed. Supple. Educ. Opp. Grant.
2,000 Access Missouri Grant.
4,000 Misc. Scholarship

Scholarships I attained from outside sources while in school at KCAI:

2,000 - Design Scholarship
2,500 - Design Scholarship

Total of 37,050.

My daughter will by a HS senior this year and we have visited several colleges; but fell in love with the Hartford Art school. Any advice on how secure one of their full scholarships. She is an AP student, current grade point 4.175, excellent artistic talent and has won several local competitions.

Did you have a portfolio review while you were visiting? My dd did and was told she would be in line for a merit scholarship if she applied. You could contact them and see if there are more stringent requirements on portfolios that get merit money. Also, check with admissions. There could be scholarships available to your dd scholastically too, that might vary from the art ones.

The art school was great there and we loved West Hartford. Good luck.

My d was offered one of the full tuition scholarships last year. She went to National Portfolio Review day there in October and was told that she would be able to get “big $” with her portfolio so she applied and was initially offered $20,000 per year. Then she recieved a letter inviting her to compete for one of 4 full tuition scholarships by submitting a portfolio (I think it had to be 10 to 12 pieces) online.

D ended up deciding on another school, but she was very impressed with the Art School, she just wasn’t thrilled with the rest of the University.

Good luck to your daughter!
