Colleges that send daily letters of encouragement.

With one exception, my son was not interested in the deluge of college brochures that started arriving 2 years ago. He did get a big kick out of the unsolicited mailings from Yale (3 different mailings, although he did not respond to any) - he pinned the postcard (saying something like you are our kind of student) up on the bulletin board over his desk. There was no way he would even think of applying to Yale (and with all the thousands of qualified applicants Yale gets I don't understand why it bothers with these mass mailings).

Jrpar..where did your son decide to go to college? Just curious.

He's waiting to hear now from an ED school.

GOOD LUCK! COunting the days, I am sure.

Thanks! :)

Just a thought.....the day my S received the EA letter from Harvard...I ran up to the HS.....he was at wrestling practice that afternoon. I ran through the halls like a lunatic..kissing and hugging the principal....stopping every teacher I could find....congratulating them on their fine job...and then streaking into the gym where he was lying on a mat in a semi-pinned compromised position ( he was a "terrible" wrestler, poor thing) jumping up and down in place.....screaming, "YOU GOT IN! YOU GOT IN!" He had no idea what I was talking about! To this day, he reminds me of the spectacle I made of myself. How embarrassing!

I bet no one else remembers it as embarrassing - just a happy moment!

so you opened it?
I would be embarrased too:eek:

my daughter didnt apply to any of the schools that targeted her with mailings. She barely even glanced at them, but I am sure glad we have recycling and I didn't have to haul all the stuff to the garbage!

Just peeked!!

Just peeked! I love it!!! That's a great story, especially the part about your S pinned to the mat!! My sister lives in England and she e-mailed me today to say that a letter had arrived from one of her D's choices. She agonized all day waiting for her daughter to get home and open it. Well it turned out to be a letter saying that it would be a long time before they made the decision. If she had 'just peeked' it would have saved a lot of wasted anticipation on both our parts.

They also get bombarded by e-mails but at least those don't waste paper.

My son received an envelope shortly after he sent off his EA application. I was sure it was just to confirm that the school had received his app; however, the envelope wasn't really sealed. I peeked, then stuck the letter back in the envelope and sealed it up tight. With the address facing the wrong way.

LOL 1moremom!! That made me laugh. Busted!

Son told me tonight that the calls have started coming to his cell phone from students at a few colleges wanting to know if he had any questions or was planning to visit (offering to host him). I asked what he says and he told me he just asks how they got his number. I asked "did you put your phone number on the cards you filled out at the info sessions?" The answer was "oh, right". LOL

He still doesn't understand any of this and is serious when he asks me why they call him. I printed out the article referenced in the other thread and highlighted the 1800.....that's why.

Really it would be more considerate if the college made it clear on the envelope what was going on :) My son got a letter today from a rolling admissions school - on the back of the envelope, where you would tear it open, was a big "YES!".

My S has been getting mail from U of Chicago since he took the PSAT as a sophomore. I think they figure anyone who takes the PSAT a year early must be serious. But S could never get into U of Chicago, and if he did he would hate it! Their mail is often pretty clever, to my mind, but illustrates each time that it is not a good fit for S....

Well now I'm mad!! :-) I picked up a huge pile of mail today and started looking through it and saw a return address that said "Admissions Office." Hoping against hope it was a very very early ED acceptance. But no, of course; it was another marketing letter instead from a school my daughter doesn't want to go to...

We get the most mail from Johnson and Wales. D put down somewhere that she is interested in hotel management. We have been getting twice weekly mail from them for about 3 years now. Plus a weekly e -mail. Since D has never responded to any of them you would think they would give up. But it keeps on coming!

My S gave me permission last year to open his mail and call him immediatlely- college mail only as he was at school late for sports. He would ususlly call me at home especially as April 1 approached asking if the mail came. Same with e-mail sites. It was very nice. I doubt my D will allow that this year oh well!

We are getting deluged with mail from Texas, Oklahoma and most recently, Arizona schools. All offering substantial merit scholarships, such as $20k a year... (if only S were interested in the southwest!). And Skidmore and Northwestern -- a lot -- (which aren't offering merit scholarships at all, since I don't think they have them.) Every time I see one of these letters or postcards, I feel more hopeful about his EA application to Chicago... but then I remember, it's just marketing based on PSATs... they don't really know my kid or want him personally... and I come back down to reality.

Oh, how many more days until "mid-December???" I can't stand it.
