We attended a school information session last spring and were told by an admission staff person that the school does not super score ACT exams because the ACT organization advises against it. It has been a long time since I took statistics so I don’t know the correct term to use, but the way I understood it, the sub-sections of the ACT are not necessarily statistically equal between test administrations. I may have gotten that part wrong but he definitely said the ACT organization specifically advises against super scoring their test.

Okay, thanks bluebayou, I will call them back and ask the way you phrased it.

Greta, I was not aware of that, but I don’t think colleges really care seeing as how top colleges like Harvard still continue to superscore both the SAT and ACT.

Anyone know if SUNY schools superscore, like Binghamton or Stony brook?

University of Dayton does

I reckon I got (no omits):

CR - 11 wrong
W - 6 wrong 10 essay
Maths - 2 wrong

Did I make 2100?

ohhh ok, i went to an information session for GWU and i thought that rule applied to ACT’s too. “If standardized tests are taken more than once, we will use the HIGHEST COMPOSITE ACT or the highest COMBINED SAT score.” So i guess it only works for SAT.

Oops! My bad haha! :P

Okay someone else can run this thread, I got my 34 single sitting so I don’t need to superscore anymore.

Found this online- it may help.

Some counselors say the ACT folks used to discourage superscoring, insisting that the test parts constituted a whole that should not be broken apart for the sake of grading.

I asked ACT, the organization that owns the test, and here’s what spokesman Ed Colby said:

“I’m afraid we don’t really have a definitive answer for why fewer schools superscore the ACT than the SAT. We would defer to the colleges themselves on that question, as the answer may vary from school to school.

“ACT doesn’t make a specific recommendation to colleges in terms of how to deal with multiple scores. We leave it to them to decide which approach is best for their purposes. They are obviously in the best position to understand their own particular needs and the context in which they use the scores.

"As for knowing which institutions use the superscore option: That’s not really something we keep close track of.

I know Cornell CALS doesn’t superscore. As for the rest…

looks like NU doesnt ss ACT

also, I asked them on the phone this yr and they said they do not ss ACT.

Northwestern doesn’t superscore.

Composite from one sitting is much more important than individual scores.

Here’s the e-mail reply I received from RPI on Nov 10, 2010:

Thank you for your question and interest in Rensselaer. In response to your question about super-scoring ACT scores, the admissions counselor reading the application will look at only the ACT composite score. We only super-score SAT scores. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

And here’s the one I received from JHU also on Nov 10, 2010. I’m not sure what to believe:

We do take the highest score among the different parts of the ACT, regardless of the test date. The term Super Score is a trademark of the College Board for the sole purpose of the SATs, so we cant use that reference on our website.

Thanks for e-mailing,

I have found many conversion tables for overall SAT vs ACT composite scores but, none for each sectional score, is there such a conversion table?

Subscores cannot be converted between SAT and ACT except for Math + CR and Math+English at specific schools.

almost positive NYU does.

also, regarding the updated list… last i checked, UMCP wasnt a LAC =)

Drat, of course it would be NYU!

Northwestern doesn’t superscore the ACT. Only the SAT. This is for sure.

Wash U in St. Louis and the University of Colorado both superscore the ACT for admission and merit scholarships.
