Colleges that want students from California

Hi, i have applied to colleges, yet my financial situation may lead me to a cc, so if you guys could lend me a hand:

Is there colleges, outside of ca(i know about wue), that want cali students and will give a scholarship for an out of state student like that?

THANK YOU

The colleges give scholarships based on credentials and not based on student’s state.

Try Alabama – they seem to be a real up and comer and desperate for good out of state students. They often give full rides from what I read on CC. Strong football team too.

An OOS is more desirable if he comes from a state with fewer aspiring college students, which means California gets the short end of the match due to their numbers and qualifications. To the best of my knowledge, no college/university outside California will give financial aid/scholarships solely because you are from California.

That said, the state schools in Nevada will offer you their in-state tuition, but they are generally worse than the CSUs in most ways.

As texaspg says, scholarships are not specifically given for geographic diversity at any colleges I know of. However, you may improve your chances at merit aid if you apply to a college that does not have many students from your part of the country (eg, small midwestern or southern private colleges might like to have a few more California students). I am pretty sure that “geographic” diversity helped bump up one of my kid’s merit aid at a private college several states away. But this probably is not going to be enough to offset a severe financial shortfall (if you are already looking at CCs instead of in-state public colleges, you have a much bigger gap than likely would be covered by slightly increased merit aid in this situation). Also, it costs more to travel to and from school when the school is far away.

Have you applied for need-based financial aid?

thanks for all of the feedback, yes i actually just finished the FAFSA. I was talking to my mom about this, and i would need to have tuition and fee’s at 20k or less, i am going to get a 3-5k jewish scholarship thingy though. I am not looking at a community college as my first choice, but my backup is going to Santa Monica College, and try to get out in a year and transfer.

All the UCs have total costs in the 20k range if you live off-campus, spend smart and apply for some grants/scholarships. Save money also by buying books online, cooking food yourself, and being innovative.

All the CSUs have total costs below 20k even if you live on campus.

Do you qualify for any http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-12.html</a> ?

If you go to community college, your options for transferring to a UC or CSU are much better if you are a junior level transfer (i.e. completed two years’ worth of courses) than if you are a sophomore level transfer (i.e. completed one year worth of courses).

i have above a 3.0, but my sat was around the 1700’s, so sadly no

most said i would have to get basically close to 1900’s and 2000’s/31-32

3.0/1700 probably gets you into UCR, UCM and most Cal States except SLO, Pomona, and SDSU.

would it be worth my time to apply to any schools in the midwest or the south?

Best of Luck & Go Bucks!! :)

on the act i got a 25, so i guess it is out of the question.
Does anyone else know about schools with GENEROUS aid,
and does anyone know if emailing the colleges regional counselor will help my chance?

I don’t think that emailing someone will help you chances… sorry!

Schools with generous FA get many applicants so they can choose the best students. Starting at a CCC and moving to a CSU or UC is a great way to get an education.

If you’re lowish income with average stats, then your best best will likely be a Calif public. You’ll qualify for Cal Grants, possibly a Pell Grant, and a student loan, and maybe other aid.

Did you apply to any CSUs? Any that you can commute to?

Going to a CC for one year and transferring is not a good idea. The Calif publics won’t accept you with only one year of CC, and OOS schools won’t give you great aid or merit.

If you’re lowish income, then WUE schools dont’ often work either. The 150% tuition plus room and board is beyond federal aid, and the WUE schools won’t give scholarships with the WUE benefit, and you won’t qualify for any state aid they have. WUE tends to work for those who can full or near full pay.

i want to major is sports business though, the uc and cal states unfortunantely do not have it. Schools like Oregon and Umass are going to be to much for me

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) comes up with the following in California:

Business Administration (Sports and Entertainment Marketing Concentration B.A. (CSUSB)
Business Administration B.S. with Sports Marketing Option (CSUFRES)

Plus various recreation administration majors, if you mean participant sports.

thanks, but idk if id want to go to san bernadino or fresno
