Colleges that you seriously considered but then decided against

By now, most of us seniors have finalized our lists and started (or finished!) applying. I personally considered a lot of colleges before deciding NOT to apply to them. Did you?

On my cutting-room floor: St. John's College (MD), Sweet Briar College, Mount Holyoke College, Colby College, Bates College, Connecticut College, Hampshire College, Wells College, Hollins University, Guilford College

I seriously seriously considered applying early to Columbia because I had lots of legacy and connections and it looked like I had a pretty good shot of getting in, but I ultimately decided against it because I’ve lived about a 10 minute walk from it for my entire life and I just couldn’t imagine going to college in NYC. I ultimately realized that that just wasn’t what I wanted, so despite all of the incentive, I decided against it and applied ED to a differentschool and was accepted. No regrets! While I would have loved to continue my family legacy, that can’t really be an important factor in your college decision. In the end, YOU are going to be the one going there.

For me Northwestern, Davidson, Oberlin, Haverford

Out of interest MissPickwickian why did you decide against Guilford?

Amherst, Carleton, and Grinnell were the big ones. All of them felt way too isolated.

Colleges my S visited but decided not to apply to:

Amherst
Colby
Dartmouth
Georgetown
George Washington
Macalester
Reed
Tufts

Yale, UPenn, Cal Poly SLO, Brown, Columbia.
lol I know the middle one doesnt really fit in
In fact after all was said and done, I only applied to one Ivy League college.

after visiting, i decided not to apply to emory and vanderbilt.

^ Why?

10 char…

Cornell (awful weather, boring town and close proximity to my relatives)
Colgate (see Cornell)
Rice (seemed too nerdy/academic for my tastes and I prefer Austin (and UT) over Houston)

University of Wisconsin (bi tchy forum)
Was my safety anyway V_V

Barnard. I really like it, but Columbia is my number one times a bajillion, and it’d feel weird to be at Barnard.

Hmm, also Macalester (decided it was too small), USC (honestly, I just didn’t want to fill out a whole separate app), and U Rochester (I just didn’t really love it), and a lot of LACs that were ultimately just not for me.

University of South Carolina. Beautiful school, great people, and they offered me a pretty substantial merit scholarship. Decided against it, but it was a tough, tough choice.

RML…

i found emory to be too serious for me. the students just didn’t seem…fun or something. also, i didn’t like how its school spirit revolves around a mascot. sports didn’t seem to be a big thing there (and i like sports!) and i dont even think it has a football team.

vanderbilt was too preppy. i thought that the school and the surrounding grounds were beautiful, but the students just kind of turned me off.

@Captainculpepper

I liked most things about Guilford, but I decided against it because it offered too much partying and not enough of the traditional liberal arts experience. I opted for Earlham instead.

St. John’s College is a great school…for the right person. I nursed a crush on it for two whole years. However, in the end I decided that the Great Books Curriculum would hinder me at the time when I most wanted to explore the modern world.

Mount Holyoke was another infatuation of mine. Unfortunately, their admissions people were very rude, and I chose not to apply to a school that didn’t want me. Their loss.

Colby…Bates…Connecticut…all reaches. I needed to prune my list, and I decided in favor of Grinnell and Smith.

After I got my early acceptance to Agnes Scott College, I didn’t need my safety school - Hollins University - anymore.

Wells recruited me, but when I heard about their serious endowment problems I ran screaming in the other direction. Money is a concern for me.

Bentley, Santa Clara, University of Puget Sound

U Penn. Decided against it at the last possible moment.

I seriously considered a lot of schools but had to remove many. Few are:
Michigan State University, was once my top choice but would like to experience living out of my current city… MSU is only about 10 mins from my house.
New York University, is known as one of the worst for financial aid reguardless of need. I decided that I can always try attending as a visiting student, and seriously consider there for graduate.
University of Southern California, its across the country for me, would seriously consider the school for graduate.
In addition to many of the schools listed above, and others I did not give examples for… I also had to remove the schools simply because I would be unable to fund sending my test scores out to every single school…

Wake Forest. It’s small and still academically strong, which would fit me well. It also has a beautiful campus in a beautiful city 40 minutes from home. decided against it because I don’t think any school is worth $52000 a year… I would choose my safeties over it because of that. Also, gold and black?! ugly

Seriously, seriously considered Rhodes and U Richmond, but the campuses didn’t feel like they’d be big enough for me. Also considered Rice to a lesser extent.

Basic info. kid from San Francisco area/photography major wanted OUT of California.
Schools visited and cut;
SCAD-not a good fit
SVA-no diversity among students
Cornish College of Arts-nice small school-BFA in Arts not photography

Going to Parsons!
