colleges to become curators?

What colleges do you reccomend if one wants to become a museum curator? Any input would be helpful! thanks!

When I was at Syracuse, they had an excellent grad program in museology--I would doubt if it's an undergrad major. Probably need to look inot art history programs.

There are many colleges and universities with good art history programs. Without knowing anything about you and your preferences, it's difficult to give you recommendations.

Williams is generally thought to have one of the best. Many of the top curators in the country are Williams grads to the extent that they are called the Williams Mafia. There are three excellent museums on or near campus and students can get handson training.

Other good LACs for art history are Skidmore, Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Vassar, Bard, Kenyon. (I assume from your name you are male. If not, add Smith and Bryn Mawr.)

For universities I'd suggest Yale, Brown, and Michigan. These are just the ones that I'm familar with. Many universities have good art history departments.

Probably depends what kind of museum. Assuming it is NOT art, I'd choose a school in a major city, where there are major museums, and where there are possibilities of internships. NYU, GWU, Georgetown, Columbia, Boston U., Northwestern, and UChicago immediately come to mind.

GWU and NYU do offer undergraduate programs in museum studies. A few other schools that offer either majors or minors in museum studies include: Beloit (particularly strong in archeology if that's the type of museum you're interested in), Connecticut College, San Francisco State U, Hartwick College, Lynchburg, Florida State. Goucher and Mary Washington College offer excellent undergraduate programs in historic preservation with a museum component.

If it's art, look into U Texas at Austin.

I know that GWU is really great of Art, not only because of the plethora of National Art museums and smithsonians, but because the university utilizes those facilities to the best of their abilities. I know that in Art History, profs have field trips to different museums, and students can opt for an internship to be arranged by the university at a museum. Here is a link for art history options they offer: http://www2.gwu.edu/~bulletin/ugrad/ah.html

O, this is a much better link for offerings of museum studies: http://www.gwu.edu/~schedule/Summer.2004.Main.Campus.MSTD.html
